Surfing Pups, Social Media Battles, and a Spotlight on the Arts

Surfing Dogs Make Waves in Flagler Beach
Flagler Beach is gearing up for the 4th Annual Hang 8 Dog Surfing Extravaganza, bringing together surf-loving pups from near and far. Organizers Eric Cooley and Suzie Johnston have secured city approval to temporarily lift the dog ban on the beach for this fan-favorite event, which draws large crowds and even national media attention. This year, the competition expands with a new category for medium-sized dogs, and an adoptable dog area has been added in hopes of helping local rescues find forever homes. The event remains a fundraiser, with all proceeds benefiting K9s for Warriors, SMART Pet Rescue, and the Flagler County Humane Society. Source: News Daytona Beach

Judge Upholds Florida’s Teen Social Media Ban
In a legal showdown, Florida’s new social media restrictions for young teens remain intact, at least for now. A federal judge declined to block the law, which prohibits kids under 16 from using social media platforms with "addictive features" unless parents grant permission for 14- and 15-year-olds. Tech companies argued the law is unconstitutional, but the judge ruled they failed to prove which platforms would be affected. The broader legal battle continues in federal court as questions remain about enforcement and online age verification. Source: Daytona News-Journal

Congressional Campaign Sparks Controversy
Meanwhile, political tensions are heating up in the race for Congress, as Democratic candidate Josh Weil faces allegations of misquoting his Republican opponent, Randy Fine, in a campaign mailer. A Volusia GOP official has filed a complaint with the Florida Elections Commission, claiming Weil falsely attributed a statement about defunding Social Security to Fine. Weil maintains confidence in his campaign’s sourcing and says they will review the complaint. The special election to fill the congressional seat vacated by Michael Waltz takes place on April 1. 31 Supper Club Begins a New Chapter
On a lighter note, the iconic 31 Supper Club in Ormond Beach has entered a new era under the ownership of longtime performers Dana and Sharon Kamide. Known for their Vegas-style musical acts, the couple is bringing fresh energy to the historic venue while maintaining its signature Art Deco charm. The duo, who were recently nominated for a Grammy, continue to blend live entertainment with fine dining, promising a unique experience for guests. Source: Hometown News

Season of the Arts Brings Volusia County to Life
The arts scene in Volusia County is also getting a major boost with the inaugural Season of the Arts, running from March 23 to April 13. This countywide celebration will feature over 100 events and honor influential figures in the local arts community. Among those recognized is Ormond Beach artist Thays França, who will receive the Artist of Distinction award for her contributions, including transforming the cityscape one mural at a time. The Arts VoCo Gala on April 1 will also honor philanthropist Cici Brown and support Volusia County Schools' fine arts programs. Source: Ormond Observer
