Crowd Control Considerations After Daytona Beach Incident
Volusia County officials are weighing options to curb large beach crowds following a spring break shooting in Daytona Beach that left two young men injured. The shooting, which occurred during an unsanctioned "Beach Day" event, has prompted concerns about safety and tourism impact.
County Council Vice Chairman Matt Reinhart has called for a review of crowd-control measures, emphasizing the need to maintain Daytona Beach’s revitalization efforts. While some council members support exploring options like curfews and fines, others question the legality and practicality of limiting unsanctioned gatherings. The discussion will continue at a future County Council meeting, with input from local law enforcement.

Florida Considers Full-Day Student Phone Ban
Florida lawmakers are debating two bills that could significantly impact student cellphone use in schools. One proposal would ban phones entirely during the school day, while another calls for a trial run in six school districts before implementing a statewide policy. Supporters argue that eliminating distractions improves academic performance, while critics worry about student safety in emergencies.
Several states have enacted or considered similar bans, with varying levels of restriction. Some allow phone use during breaks, while others require devices to be locked away. If passed, Florida’s ban would take effect in July 2025, with exceptions for students with disabilities, health emergencies, and extracurricular activities.

Summer Meals Program Seeks Volunteers
With summer break approaching, Volusia County is seeking sites to participate in the Summer BreakSpot program, which provides free meals to children in need. The federally funded program runs from June 3 through August 9, ensuring that children who rely on school meals don’t go hungry during vacation.
Churches, social service agencies, and nonprofits are encouraged to host meal sites. The county will provide training and deliver meals at no cost to participating organizations. Last year, 61 locations took part in the program, and officials hope to expand further in 2025.
Applications are due by April 12. Interested organizations can contact Patricia Hubbard at [email protected] or 386-736-5956, ext. 12984, for more details.

Cat Care Clinic Marks 25 Years in Ormond Beach
Ormond Beach’s Cat Care Clinic is celebrating a quarter-century of feline-focused veterinary care with a special open house event on March 22. The clinic, founded in 2000, has grown into one of the busiest cat hospitals in the country, offering state-of-the-art treatment in a dog-free environment.
Dr. Amber Carter, who took over the practice in 2015, invites the community to tour the facility, enjoy refreshments, and participate in a raffle featuring pet-friendly prizes. The event serves as both a celebration and a reminder that cats require regular veterinary care to stay healthy.
“We’re here to make that a positive experience for them,” Dr. Carter said.
