Volusia urges AED registration for public safety
When it comes to saving lives, seconds matter — and Volusia County wants to make every second count. The county is encouraging residents, businesses, and organizations to register their Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) with the Emergency Medical Administration Division. Why? Because during a cardiac emergency, 9-1-1 dispatchers can guide callers directly to these lifesaving devices — but only if they know where they are.
An AED can significantly improve survival chances by quickly analyzing and restoring heart rhythm. But accessibility is key. A registered device is a usable device. County officials also remind AED owners to check batteries, pads (both adult and pediatric), and keep the equipment clean and ready.
Think of it as teamwork: the public provides the location, dispatchers provide the direction, and lives get saved in the process.

Boost for Local Culture and Parks
Volusia County Council awards $1.4M in ECHO grants
From ceramics to pickleball, culture and recreation just got a welcome boost in Volusia County. The County Council unanimously approved nearly $1.4 million in ECHO grant funding to support four community-enhancing projects. These grants, part of the voter-approved ECHO (Environmental, Cultural, Historical, and Outdoor) program, are matched by more than $3 million in partner investments.
Highlights include:
$600,000 to the Hub on Canal for a new education building with art studios and classrooms.
$600,000 for Conservation Florida to create a nature center in the Florida Wildlife Corridor.
$110,000 to the City of DeBary to expand and upgrade Bill Keller Park.
$57,500 to the Little Theatre of New Smyrna Beach for modern LED visual technology.
From creative expression to outdoor play, these grants are helping build a more vibrant and engaging community.

Rural Boundaries in Limbo
Volusia Council delays vote as state bill looms
A state bill is putting the brakes on a long-discussed Volusia County issue. Senate Bill 1118, if passed, would nullify local charter amendments that protect rural areas — and it would do so retroactively to 2011. In response, the Volusia County Council voted to postpone its planned March discussion about a rural boundary amendment.
Council members say they want to wait and see what happens in Tallahassee. Chair Jeff Brower voiced frustration, saying state lawmakers are stripping away local authority. “I’m really tired of preemptions from Tallahassee,” Brower said.
SB 1118 mirrors what’s happening elsewhere in Florida, where development pressures continue to clash with efforts to preserve green space. For now, Volusia’s conversation is paused, though residents like John Nicholson urged the council to at least start the process.
As the Legislature debates, so too will the fate of rural protections in Volusia hang in the balance.

Healing the Forgotten
Ormond nonprofit gives second chances to injured wildlife
On three peaceful acres in Ormond Beach, lives are quietly being saved — one raccoon, deer, and opossum at a time. Dawn Barbone, founder of Samadhi Wildlife, has dedicated her life to rescuing and rehabilitating animals that are often left for dead.
Take Faithy, a deer rescued as a fawn with severe pneumonia. Now a permanent resident due to ongoing health issues, she starts her days with fresh fruit and gentle care. Dozens more, from baby raccoons to opossums, also get a second shot thanks to Barbone and her team.
Samadhi Wildlife’s mission is simple: rescue, rehabilitate, and release. But keeping the sanctuary running isn’t easy. The nonprofit relies entirely on donations, and current goals include building a clinic and more enclosures.
Volunteers like Selena Moats say the work is inspiring — and essential. Visit Dawn’s Facebook Page here.
