💓 A Jolt of Team Spirit: Quick-Thinking Tennis Players Save a Life
For Palm Coast tennis player Anthony Truong, a weekend match in Ormond Beach turned into a life-or-death moment — and his teammates rose to the occasion. Truong, 51, collapsed on the court at Oceanside Country Club during a match, suffering sudden cardiac arrest. What followed was a textbook example of community response and calm under pressure.
Players from both teams — including ophthalmologist Dr. James Li and fellow teammate David Delacruz — performed CPR and used the club’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to restart Truong’s heart before paramedics arrived. Several doctors in the crowd also assisted.
Thanks to their efforts and the availability of the AED, Truong made a full recovery. In true team spirit, he later treated his rescuers to a celebratory hot pot dinner.
“It reminded me not to take life for granted,” Truong said.

🧬 Mystery in the Pines: Help Name John Doe from 1982

Image: Volusia County Sheriff
From a life saved to a life still unidentified, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office is seeking help to solve a 43-year-old mystery. In 1982, skeletal remains of a man were found in the woods near Williamson Boulevard in Ormond Beach. Now, advances in DNA technology have brought investigators closer than ever to giving this John Doe a name.
Working with FHD Forensics and the Dean and Tina Linn Clouse Memorial Foundation, VSO is urging people of French Canadian or Irish Canadian descent — particularly those with ties to Ontario, Quebec, Massachusetts, Illinois or Michigan — to contribute DNA samples. Genealogy analysis revealed links to surnames like LeFevre, LaPoint, and Desjardins.
The goal? Identify the man and bring long-overdue closure to his family.

Next up, a bureaucratic shift with big real-world effects. Starting March 31, the Social Security Administration will no longer verify identities over the phone. Instead, new applicants and anyone updating direct deposit info will need to do so in person — or successfully navigate the agency’s online platform.
The policy aims to curb the more than $100 million lost annually to direct deposit fraud. But critics say the new rules will hit rural seniors and people with disabilities the hardest, especially as dozens of SSA field offices prepare to shut down nationwide. However, SSA officials downplayed the impact of its offices shuttering, saying many were small remote hearing sites that served few members of the public
The agency is also facing legal challenges over access to personal data as part of broader government downsizing efforts. Meanwhile, the turnaround time for direct deposit changes will improve — from 30 days to one business day.

🏍️ Riding for Michael - Bikers Rally After Tragic Dog Attack
Finally, a powerful show of solidarity on two wheels. Hundreds of bikers are set to ride through Volusia County in honor of 8-year-old Michael Millett, who was fatally attacked by two dogs while riding his bike in DeLand earlier this year.
The charity ride — a poker run starting at Sledz East Cycles — aims to raise funds for Michael’s family and build support for House Bill 593, which would increase penalties for dangerous dog attacks. Event organizer Mandy Shrader, who lives near the site of the tragedy, said she felt compelled to help despite never having met the family.
“This tragedy has affected so many people,” she said. “It takes a village to make a change.”
Even non-bikers are welcome to join the final stop at The Inn Between Bar to show support.
