🐾 Dog Beach Decision Heads to the County

From heartwarming generosity to tail-wagging enthusiasm, community members are rallying once again — this time in support of a dog-friendly beach. On April 1, Volusia County commissioners will vote on whether to approve a designated spot where pups and their humans can enjoy the coast together.

The push is led by Daytona Dog Beach, Inc., a nonprofit devoted to responsible beach access for canines. Supporters are encouraged to show up in dog-themed apparel and bring 8x10 photos of their furry companions to make the case more personal. Those interested in speaking at the meeting can sign up to voice their support — but keep it brief: three minutes per speaker.

With cities across the country embracing pet-friendly spaces, Volusia may be next in line to let the dogs out — legally. Visit their website at daytonadogbeach.org.

💖 Cooling Comfort for a Cancer Warrior

When Katrina Young’s Holly Hill home lost air conditioning, her friend Kat Flannery jumped into action. Facing a rare form of breast cancer, Young needed more than just comfort — she needed relief from the Florida heat. Flannery, a retired disabled veteran who had sold her house to travel the country in a motorhome, was prepared to sell that very motorhome to fund a new AC system for her friend.

Enter All Volusia Flagler Heating and Air. Co-owner Brian Madalena was moved by the story after visiting the home and made a few key calls. Thanks to a partnership with Daikin Comfort and territory manager Jim Andrews, the team donated and installed a brand-new air conditioning system — at no cost to Young.

Sometimes, kindness really is the coolest thing around.

🗳️ Early Voting Tightens in Special Congressional Race

While the dog lovers prepare for April 1, political observers are watching a different kind of race unfold. Early voting is underway in the special election to replace former Congressman Michael Waltz, who left office to become the U.S. national security advisor.

The leading contenders for Florida’s 6th Congressional District are Republican Randy Fine, a Trump ally, and Democrat Josh Weil, who’s focused on preserving Medicare and Social Security. After the first two days of early voting, Democrats held a slight edge in turnout — especially in Volusia County — but Republicans were dominating in other areas of the district.

With both sides confident, and the numbers close, the April 1 vote could bring a surprise twist in a typically red region.

🧬 23andMe Bankruptcy Sparks Data Privacy Questions

Rounding out this week’s stories: genetic testing giant 23andMe has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, raising concerns among its customers about what happens to their sensitive data.

The move follows a rocky period for the company — including a major data breach in 2023 and a drop in demand for DNA testing kits. While users can now request to delete their personal information from the platform, the fine print reveals not everything can be erased. Some genetic and demographic data must legally be retained by the company or its labs.

However, concerns have been raised in the past because **23andMe entered a partnership in 2018 with Chinese pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which sparked speculation about data sharing and international research collaborations. While this partnership aimed to use aggregated, anonymized data for drug development, 23andMe has maintained that individual user data is not sold or shared without explicit consent and that genetic samples are not processed in China.

That said, privacy and data security have remained ongoing concerns, especially after the 2023 data breach, which exposed information from nearly 7 million users.

If you’ve ever sent in your spit to see if you’re 3% Viking, now might be the time to double-check your settings. See more information in main story.
