🚛 Fuel Farm Relocation Brings Relief to Ormond Beach
After nearly two years of community pushback, Ormond Beach residents are exhaling a collective sigh of relief. Belvedere Terminals, the company behind a proposed 20-million-gallon fuel storage facility, announced it will no longer build in Ormond Beach. Instead, the project is moving about 25 miles north to Palm Coast. The original plan raised widespread concerns—proximity to homes and a sports complex, traffic, and environmental risks topped the list. Local voices like Elena Krafft and Robin Magleora credit grassroots organizing and bipartisan advocacy for the win. With the help of Senator Tom Leek and former Mayor Bill Partington, residents feel their voices truly made a difference. Meanwhile, Palm Coast officials are welcoming the $75 million project as a potential boost for jobs and tax revenue. The shift is a victory for one community, and a gamble for another.

⛽ Proposed Circle K Sparks Zoning Debate
As one fuel fight ends, another begins. Ormond Beach resident Amber Bobak is raising the alarm about a proposed Circle K gas station that would sit less than 400 feet from her home on S. Nova Road. The site, currently home to a defunct bank, falls under a commercial zoning category that allows gas stations with limited oversight. Bobak and her neighbors attended a neighborhood meeting hoping to voice concerns, but she says the developers were dismissive. Since then, she’s launched a petition with over 120 signatures citing traffic, environmental, and health worries. With two existing gas stations already across the street, residents question the need for a third. The city has agreed to review the zoning district, with the Planning Board expected to revisit the issue. Bobak’s hope? That future projects like this will undergo more thoughtful scrutiny.

🔥 Dry Conditions Elevate Fire Risk Across the Region
East Central Florida is feeling the heat—and not in a good way. With rainfall totals far below average, Volusia and Flagler counties are under an elevated fire danger advisory from the National Weather Service. Daytona Beach is especially parched, receiving only 0.43 inches of rain in March, compared to a monthly average of over three inches. Flagler County isn’t far behind, with below-average totals across cities like Palm Coast and Bunnell. Gusty winds and low humidity are adding fuel to the fire—literally. Relief could come Sunday, with a 70% chance of rain and the possibility of strong storms. But meteorologists warn: one stormy day won’t undo a season’s worth of drought.

🦟 Free Tire Disposal Aims to Drain Mosquito Threat
While the skies may be dry, stagnant water is still a concern—especially when it collects in old tires. That’s why Volusia County is offering residents a chance to offload up to 20 unused tires per household at a special collection event on Saturday, April 5. Hosted by Volusia County Mosquito Control, the event runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 801 South St., New Smyrna Beach. The goal? Eliminate one of the mosquitoes' favorite breeding grounds. Accumulated rainwater, shaded areas, and decaying organic matter in tires make them ideal nurseries for mosquito larvae. With diseases like West Nile and dengue present in Florida, public health officials hope this initiative helps curb mosquito populations before summer hits full swing.
