🚕 Late Afternoon Crash on Williamson Blvd Knocks Out Power

What we know at this time: A vehicle traveling at high speed northbound on Williamson Boulevard struck a utility pole late Saturday afternoon, splitting it in two and dragging down power lines, officials said. The accident caused a temporary, but widespread power outage affecting nearby homes, traffic lights, and commercial centers.

The collision darkened traffic signals at the busy intersection of Hand Avenue and Williamson Boulevard, where police officers were dispatched to direct traffic. Power was also lost at The Napier and Drift apartment complexes and across several restaurants, residences and businesses along the northern end of Williamson Boulevard.

Shops in the Towne Square Shopping Center were impacted as well, though the Publix supermarket remained open using standby power. Florida Power & Light crews worked into the evening to restore service, with power returning to most locations within a few hours.

As of Saturday night, authorities had not released information about the occupants of the vehicle or any potential injuries.

🌪️ Second Round-Community Voices Wanted: Hurricane Milton Recovery Plan

Volusia County is inviting residents to have their say on the long-term recovery plan for Hurricane Milton. A second public hearing is set for Tuesday, April 8 at 5 p.m. at the Daytona Beach Regional Library—and yes, you can attend virtually if you prefer pajamas over parking. The hearing will review the same material as the March 25 session in DeLand and will focus on the Transform386 Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) Action Plan.

The county received a generous $133.5 million in federal funding to support recovery efforts, and they want your feedback before finalizing how those dollars are spent. Comments can be submitted online, by email, or even the old-fashioned way—by mail—until April 14 at 5 p.m.

🚀 Eyes to the Sky: SpaceX Set for a Double Launch

Get ready for a weekend of celestial entertainment, as SpaceX plans back-to-back rocket launches you just might see from the Volusia coastline. First up on Sunday, March 30, is a Falcon 9 launch from Cape Canaveral deploying Starlink satellites. Then comes the real headliner: Fram2, a groundbreaking private mission that aims to send four astronauts on the first human spaceflight to orbit Earth’s poles, launching late Monday, March 31.

If the skies stay clear, you might catch a dazzling display right from Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, or New Smyrna Beach. Pro tip: head to the beach and look south. And if you're more of an armchair astronaut, live coverage starts 90 minutes before liftoff at floridatoday.com/space.

🏍Motocross Meets Marshland? County Considers Dual-Purpose Land Deal

Switching gears from outer space to off-road, Volusia County is eyeing a $4.6 million land purchase that could lead to a long-awaited public motocross facility—and a conservation area to boot. The County Council will vote Tuesday, April 1, on whether to buy 356 acres on State Road 44, right next to the Gun and Hunt Club and adjacent to Longleaf Pine Preserve.

The land would serve a dual purpose: rev up motors for motocross enthusiasts and preserve sensitive wetland ecosystems. The project has a champion in District 1 Councilman Don Dempsey, who says this is more about giving kids a safe place to ride than fulfilling any midlife adrenaline quests.

Funding would be split between Volusia Forever and ECHO programs, with over $2.3 million of ECHO funds already budgeted. Stay tuned to see if this hybrid park plan gets the green light.

Ormond Beach Author Pens AI Beginners Guide

Debra Brenneman, an Ormond Beach-based author, brings clarity and warmth to a complex topic in her new book AI for Beginners. Inspired by a casual conversation with her son, Brenneman realized just how deeply artificial intelligence has become embedded in our daily lives—from GPS and Alexa to tools like ChatGPT. Recognizing that many people still feel intimidated by the concept, she set out to write a guide that breaks AI down in a way that's accessible, relatable, and free of technical jargon. With AI for Beginners, Brenneman offers a friendly, approachable introduction to the world of artificial intelligence, helping everyday readers understand what AI is, how it works, and why it matters now more than ever. The book goes on sale on Amazon on April 1.
