🌩️ SKYWARN Wants You-Training Residents to Be Weather Spotters

If you’ve ever dreamed of reporting stormy skies like a pro, here’s your chance. Volusia County is hosting a free SKYWARN Spotter training session on May 6, and all residents are invited to participate. Hosted at the Emergency Operations Center in Daytona Beach, the 6–8 p.m. session will teach attendees how to identify and report severe weather conditions like thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flash floods. Those who complete the training will earn certification as SKYWARN spotters and help relay critical information to the National Weather Service during major weather events. The goal? To build a better-prepared community, one informed observer at a time. Space is limited and registration is required, so if you’re fascinated by Florida’s tempestuous skies, don’t delay.

🏛️ Mayor Leslie Faces Questions Over Shelter Visit

A recent tour of the Barracks of Hope—a homeless shelter for veterans—by Ormond Beach Mayor Jason Leslie has stirred a bit of unexpected controversy. Following the visit, Halifax Urban Ministries thanked Leslie for his interest, referencing the “possibility of available funds” from the city. This raised eyebrows among city commissioners, particularly Travis Sargent, who questioned whether taxpayer dollars had been promised. Leslie said no such commitment was made and emphasized he was simply exploring options to help local homeless veterans. While praising the shelter’s work, he clarified the city isn’t required to provide funding to participate. For now, the commission is considering whether to investigate the program further as a community resource. Meanwhile, the debate highlights ongoing tensions over public funding for nonprofit initiatives.

💊 Volusia County Funds Treatment & Prevention Efforts

Volusia County is stepping up its fight against opioid addiction with over $1.3 million in newly approved funding for three local organizations. The First Step Shelter, Hearthstone Fellowship, and the Neighborhood Center of West Volusia will share the funds, which come from the state’s Opioid Abatement Settlement. Each organization plans to enhance substance abuse treatment, housing, and prevention services. For example, First Step will expand its transitional shelter and medication-assisted treatments, while Hearthstone Fellowship will broaden access to mental health support. The Neighborhood Center aims to launch a comprehensive program focused on housing stability and relapse prevention. County leaders say this is a key move in delivering meaningful, long-term recovery options and addressing the broader public health crisis.

🎓Police Honor Students Doing the Right Thing

At Ormond Beach Middle School, good deeds are getting noticed—officially. Through the "Do The Right Thing" program, the Ormond Beach Police Department honors students who go above and beyond, whether it’s returning lost valuables, helping a classmate in need, or stepping up in tough situations. Since becoming a chapter member in 1998, the police department has recognized over 800 students for their integrity and leadership. Winners receive certificates, small gifts, and an off-campus trip to the police department, where they have lunch with officers and the chief. Program leaders say it’s not just about rewards—it’s about reinforcing lifelong values and creating positive interactions between youth and law enforcement. As Police Chief Jesse Godfrey puts it, these are the kinds of memories that stick with kids—and help build a stronger community.

🌤️ Florida’s “Chemtrail” Crackdown-Senate Passes Bill Banning Weather Modification

In a move that’s raising eyebrows and conversations alike, the Florida Senate has passed a bill banning "weather modification" activities—everything from cloud seeding to unregulated atmospheric spraying, sometimes referred to by conspiracy theorists as “chemtrails.” Backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and authored by Sen. Ileana Garcia, the bill aims to protect public health and state airspace. It establishes a hotline for residents to report suspicious aerial activity and imposes felony charges on those caught violating the rule. While critics say the bill panders to unproven theories, Garcia insists it's a proactive step toward transparency and oversight. Importantly, the law won’t interfere with routine climate research by agencies like NASA or NOAA. Still, the measure marks Florida as one of the first states to formally legislate on this cloudy issue.
