📅 Tax Deadline Approaches—Unless You’re in Volusia

April 15 remains the standard tax deadline for most Americans—but Volusia County residents hit by Hurricanes Helene and Milton have until May 1, 2025, to file. The IRS automatically extended the deadline for those living in one of 51 Florida counties declared disaster zones, which includes Volusia.

Even with the extra time, it’s a good idea to gather all necessary documents now, including Form 1040, W-2s, and 1099s. For those who still can’t meet the extended deadline, a formal six-month extension is available—just be sure to file for it before May 1 to avoid penalties.

Already filed? You can check your refund status via the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool.

✊ “Hands Off!” Rallies Make Noise Across the Region

Across Daytona Beach, Palm Coast, Port Orange, and other Volusia County cities, demonstrators gathered on April 5 as part of the nationwide Hands Off! 2025 movement. Local rallies, including one outside Daytona Beach City Hall and another at Target on SR-100 in Palm Coast, joined over 1,300 protests across the country. Participants voiced concerns over perceived threats to democracy and policies associated with figures like President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, as well as the Department of Government Efficiency.

According to organizers, the movement is fueled by everyday Americans—nurses, teachers, students—united in protecting civil rights and democratic values. While emotions ran high, the gatherings were peaceful, emphasizing solidarity rather than division.

🌳 Road Worker Pushed, Nearly Loses Ear in Ormond

A bizarre and disturbing incident unfolded in Ormond Beach when a 67-year-old Holly Hill man was pushed into a thicket of shrubs while working as a flag man near a local church. According to police, the suspect—an older white man with facial hair—was someone the victim recognized from a previous encounter five days earlier, when he allegedly attempted to steal the man's lunch.

When the two crossed paths again, the suspect approached to speak, then abruptly shoved the worker into nearby bushes, causing a gash so severe it nearly severed his ear. The attacker fled before police arrived, and though the area was searched, he has yet to be located. The victim says he wants to press charges if the suspect is found.

⛽ Palm Coast Mayor Reverses Course on Fuel Depot

Palm Coast Mayor Mike Norris has officially rescinded his support for a controversial fuel storage facility proposed by Belvedere Terminals. Facing intense public opposition over health, safety, and environmental concerns, Norris cited the community’s outcry as the reason for pulling the plug.

Originally pitched as a $75 million economic opportunity, the depot was to be built on a 70-acre parcel near schools and residential areas. However, residents feared potential fire hazards and pollution, concerns echoed by thousands who signed an online petition. Interestingly, this isn’t the project's first rejection—Ormond Beach previously passed on the same proposal.

Though the facility might still find a home elsewhere in Flagler County, it won’t be in Palm Coast. The city council will reconvene on April 15 to discuss further development priorities.
