⭐ Grow Smarter, Volusia Goes Green, School Budgets, and Healthcare in the Spotlight

🌺 Learn How to Plant Like a Floridian
From thirsty turf grass to invasive exotics, Florida yards often need a landscape makeover. Luckily, ReGrow Volusia is offering a free workshop to help residents garden the native way. Join sustainability manager Samantha West at the Ormond Beach Regional Library on Tuesday, April 29, from 1 to 3 p.m. to learn how to protect local waterways while beautifying your yard.
Participants will explore the pros and cons of native vs. non-native plants and learn how to use beautyberry—a native plant—for homemade insect repellent. There’s even a live demonstration. All ages are welcome, but space is limited, so reservations are encouraged.
Green thumbs and curious beginners alike will leave ready to transform their slice of Florida into a sustainable oasis.

🌿 Green Volusia Launches Recognition Program
Green Volusia is rolling out the green carpet—literally—for local businesses aiming to reduce their environmental footprint. The county’s new recognition program is designed to spotlight companies making measurable strides in sustainability. To qualify, businesses must attend educational workshops, adopt at least a dozen energy- and water-saving best practices, and host a site visit from Green Volusia staff. Once approved, they’ll receive a certificate, official logo, a listing on a community map, and a free waste and energy audit.
It’s a win-win: recognition for eco-conscious efforts and real cost savings. Green Volusia, founded in 2008, continues to champion responsible practices with long-term benefits for the planet and our pocketbooks.

📉 Volusia Schools District Faces $25 Million Budget Deficit
It’s budget season for Volusia County Schools, and the numbers are sobering. With a $25.8 million shortfall in the general operating fund, school leaders are rolling up their sleeves. Contributing factors include a drop in state funding and lower student enrollment, which drives up per-student costs.
To turn things around, the district is launching an enrollment campaign and reevaluating staff ratios. Board members remain optimistic—but realistic—about the tough decisions ahead. “We’re starting the conversation,” said Board Member Krista Goodrich, “and we’re looking at all the options before making any cuts.”
District leaders are urging the community to advocate for better school funding and highlight the importance of investing in public education. For now, it’s all about finding smart, sustainable solutions without closing doors—literally or figuratively.

🏥 AdventHealth Daytona Reaches Expansion Milestone
It’s full steam ahead for AdventHealth Daytona Beach’s major expansion. On April 7, the hospital marked a significant construction milestone with a “topping-out” ceremony—where the final steel beam was hoisted into place. The $220 million project is the largest since the hospital opened in 2009 and is set to wrap in fall 2026.
The expansion will add 104 new beds, four surgical suites, and more than 240,000 square feet of space. “It’s like building an entirely new hospital,” said Dr. David Sinclair, the facility’s recently appointed president and CEO.
The upgrade reflects the area’s booming population—particularly around the LPGA corridor—and a rising demand for comprehensive healthcare. Once complete, AdventHealth Daytona will have 466 total beds and room to grow even more in the future.
