🦐 A Shrimp Boat's Rough Landing-Updated Story

A Flagler Beach crowd gathered Monday morning for an unusual sight: the Miss Montie, a 50-foot shrimp boat, grounded on Beverly Beach. The vessel’s motor failed offshore Sunday, and when the anchor snapped, the boat drifted until it ran aground. Fortunately, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued the two crew members and their dog before the vessel hit land. Though the boat will need a new motor and propeller repair, Captain Corey Thomas says it’s salvageable. Locals snapped photos, but Thomas was less enthused, noting the incident adds to the ongoing struggles of local shrimpers facing economic pressure from cheap imports. Supporters may launch a GoFundMe to help.

🎵 Sacred Seasons Converge: Christians Mark Holy Week as Jewish Communities Prepare for Passover

As Christians around the world observe Holy Week, a period marking the final days of Jesus Christ’s life, Jewish communities are simultaneously preparing for Passover, a major holiday commemorating the Israelites' liberation from slavery in Egypt. Though rooted in different histories and theologies, the two traditions share themes of sacrifice, deliverance, and renewal — and often coincide on the calendar.

Holy Week began with Palm Sunday, when Christians recall Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem. In churches across the globe, worshippers held palm branches in processions, symbolizing the moment when crowds hailed Jesus as a messianic figure. The week continues with Maundy Thursday, marking the Last Supper, followed by Good Friday, a solemn remembrance of the crucifixion. Easter Sunday concludes the week in celebration of the resurrection, the cornerstone of Christian faith and the promise of eternal life.

Meanwhile, Jewish households are preparing for Passover, or Pesach, which begins at sundown on April 22 this year and lasts eight days. The festival opens with the Seder, a ceremonial meal that includes storytelling, symbolic foods, and readings from the Haggadah, a text that recounts the Exodus narrative. Central to the meal is the matzah, or unleavened bread, recalling the Israelites’ hasty departure from Egypt.

Passover, like Holy Week, is both deeply spiritual and highly communal. Families gather to reflect on suffering, freedom, and the enduring importance of faith in times of hardship. For many Christians, particularly those who emphasize Jesus’s Jewish identity, the Last Supper is believed to have been a Passover meal — a historical and theological link between the two observances.

Though distinct in practice, Holy Week and Passover together mark a time of introspection and hope, a convergence of sacred traditions that speak to humanity’s longing for redemption and renewal.

🌉 Volusia and Flagler Students Can Now Cross Over

In a rare show of inter-county cooperation, Volusia and Flagler school districts have signed off on a new agreement that will allow a small number of students to attend schools in the neighboring county. Starting next school year, Volusia students who live near the northern border can enroll in Flagler's Old Kings Elementary, Buddy Taylor Middle, and Flagler Palm Coast High School. Meanwhile, Flagler students near the southeast edge will have access to Volusia’s Pathways Elementary, Hinson Middle, and Mainland High. The goal? Cut down commute times for families living at the outer edges. Around 93 students will be impacted initially, and parents must apply each year based on availability. The agreement will auto-renew for nine years.

⏰ Snooze Button Incoming: Later School Start Times Delayed but Not Gone

Florida students won’t be sleeping in just yet. Although a 2023 law mandates later school start times by 2026—no earlier than 8 a.m. for middle school and 8:30 a.m. for high school—there's now a push to repeal it. Some lawmakers argue the change could strain district budgets and logistics. The repeal bill (SB 296) passed a Senate committee and is now in the House. So for now, nothing changes, but stay tuned. Meanwhile, school will still begin on Aug. 11 in both Flagler and Volusia counties for the 2025-26 school year—the earliest date allowed under Florida law. And yes, students still need to complete 180 days of school (with specific hourly minimums depending on grade level).
