🦐 Shrimp Boat Rescued After Stormy Ordeal

A local shrimp boat, Miss Montie, became the talk of Beverly Beach this week after it drifted ashore over the weekend. Captain Corey Thomas said the vessel lost power on Friday and ended up beached by Sunday. With bad weather brewing, he made the call to tow it out early Tuesday morning instead of waiting for another shrimp boat. A TowBoatUS crew pulled the vessel free in about 15 minutes, as documented in a Facebook video taken by a nearby condo resident. The boat is now en route to St. Augustine, and a GoFundMe has been launched to help Thomas with the unexpected recovery costs—it’s raised $740 of its $11,000 goal so far. Locals are relieved to see the beach cleared and the boat safe once again.

🎓 OPINION: Budget Blues: Volusia Schools Face Hard Lessons

Volusia County School Board member Donna Brosemer didn’t mince words in a recent op-ed, placing the blame for the district’s looming budget cuts squarely on local leadership. While state funding is up, the district’s declining enrollment—now four years running—is causing major ripple effects. Despite a $1.5 billion budget, cuts are being made to front-line staff while administrative bloat goes unchecked, she says. Brosemer called for stronger discipline policies, more magnet programs, and better academic offerings to retain and attract students. Her proposal to turn Ormond Beach Elementary into an arts magnet school was met with pushback—not for the idea itself, but for daring to propose it without administrative approval. Her central message? The board should lead, not rubber-stamp. With projections of 10,000 fewer students next year, she warns the time for polite silence is over. See full story.

🏖️ Rolling Back Time: Beach Driving Back on the Table

After more than two decades of beach driving bans in parts of Daytona Beach, Volusia County Council is revisiting the idea of bringing cars back to the sand—specifically from International Speedway Boulevard to Auditorium Boulevard. Council Chair Jeff Brower is spearheading the push, saying it could breathe life back into struggling Main Street businesses. But there’s a catch: while the law allows removing beach driving, it doesn’t allow reinstating it without state legislation. Add to that two recent beach-driving accidents—one involving a sunbather and another a seated beachgoer—and concerns are mounting. Still, the conversation is scheduled for the next County Council meeting. Whether it's a nostalgic nod or a risky rollback, this debate is just heating up.
