🔥 Total Burn Ban Now in Effect Across Volusia
Volusia County has implemented a countywide outdoor burn ban effective as of April 16, due to dangerously dry conditions. The ban applies to unincorporated areas and several municipalities, including Oak Hill, Lake Helen, Pierson. Residents may not burn yard waste, paper, or even light campfires—unless explicitly authorized by the Florida Forest Service. Contained gas or charcoal grills are still allowed (just skip the fire pit).
The Keetch-Byram Drought Index reached critical levels, prompting the decision, which will remain in place until conditions improve. Anyone caught violating the ban could face up to a $500 fine or even jail time. Fire Rescue officials are urging residents to stay alert and follow wildfire safety guidelines.

🏫 No Closure for Ormond Beach Elementary, Says Superintendent
Rumors that Ormond Beach Elementary might close have officially been put to rest. At an April 22 school board meeting, Superintendent Carmen Balgobin strongly denied any plans to shut down the historic school, calling the claims “irresponsible.” The rumors stemmed from a previous board meeting in which one member floated the idea—causing public confusion and concern.
Board member Krista Goodrich also chimed in, saying there’s “no place” for misinformation in the district. The school, currently overcapacity and holding an “A” grade, continues to attract families who value its legacy and performance. Officials emphasized the importance of focusing on student needs, not politics or hearsay.

🏛️ City Pushes for Local Options in Health Insurance Bid
The Ormond Beach City Commission is encouraging a fresh look at local businesses in its latest round of bids for city employee health insurance. Commissioners voiced concerns that current language in the request for proposals (RFP) could limit who qualifies, potentially excluding capable local firms.
Two commissioners recused themselves from the vote due to potential conflicts, while others pushed for adjustments—like changing “geographic” language to prioritize Florida-based experience. While the city can’t legally mandate local preference, staff agreed to tweak some terms to ensure broader participation.
The commission also approved two sidewalk improvement projects, one on Division Avenue and another on Military Boulevard, both aimed at increasing ADA accessibility.

🍄 Nationwide Enoki Mushroom Recall Over Listeria Risk
A nationwide recall of enoki mushrooms distributed by Harvest NYC Inc. is underway due to possible listeria contamination. The recall affects 200-gram green plastic packages with the barcode 6975730520101, sold between Jan. 11 and Jan. 31, 2025.
Though no illnesses have been reported yet, the presence of Listeria monocytogenes—a dangerous pathogen for vulnerable populations—was confirmed during lab testing. The FDA urges consumers to destroy the product or return it for a refund. Listeria can lead to severe health issues, including miscarriage, meningitis, or death in high-risk individuals.

Tourist Dollar Poll Results

🚫🚫🚫 Definitely not. The revenue should be used only for tourist related projects.
“A TAX designated to help Tourism Development cannot be used for “something else”, just because County leaders need money elsewhere. THAT’S called lying. So if you want to create an increase in other line items that will result in higher taxes, be HONEST about that! But before you do that, you’ll need to explain why that increase is necessary, and why leaders can’t reduce other line items to make up the difference. To call it a Tourism Tax and use that revenue for something else, is false, and a lie, and subject to legal action.”
🚫🚫🚫 Definitely not. The revenue should be used only for tourist related projects.
“The tourist related budget should only be used for attracting tourists. I find that mixing the two budgets will encourage favoritism and moving money and stealing.”
✔✔✔ Yes, no problem.
“Locals put up with more traffic and less parking space so why not.”
✔✔✔ Yes, no problem.
“The area has to have appeal to attract tourist. With visitor wear and tear improvements are much needed and the funds are there. Marketing is different now compared to when the tax was established so those dollars can be better allocated. Staffing verses contracted agencies is also to be considered for savings with many local agencies.”
✔✔✔ Yes, no problem.
“Local roads and facilities are needed in order to make tourists safe and feel comfortable.”
✔✔✔ Yes, no problem.
“I look at those funds like all the other revenue funding. And the collective funds should be used equitably for the counties needs. Not just tourism growth.”
✔✔✔ Yes, no problem.
“Spend the money where it is best utilized, not just to fund frivolous things. Like the obstacle course road work that is going on in the area now!”
✔✔✔ Yes, no problem.
“A great community helps attract tourism. Using tax dollars to support local infrastructure and small businesses, for example, will pay off in more tourism.”
❓❓❓ Not sure, maybe in some cases or for emergencies.
“I think that tourists affect the citizens for good and bad so their tax dollars should also be able to be used for emergencies that are also caused by them.”

“Could be used if helpful for both sides.”

“Need more information on how it would be spent. Which projects exactly?”
