🎭 Legacy Garden Fundraiser Blooms at the Ormond PAC

The Friends of the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center are launching a "brick by brick" legacy fundraiser. Community members can purchase personalized bricks — $150 for small, $250 for large — to be placed in the new Legacy Garden, opening July 2026. Proceeds will support the PAC’s mission to promote arts and culture. Since reopening after a 2024 fire and renovation, the center has drawn enthusiastic crowds, but organizers say many residents still don’t realize it’s back in full swing. Buying a brick isn't just about supporting the arts — it's about leaving a lasting footprint in Ormond Beach's cultural heart.

🍔 Ormond Burger Week Returns to "Meat the Need"

Ormond Burger Week 2025 is set to fire up appetites from May 2-11, as 20 local restaurants throw their best burgers on the grill for a good cause. This year’s competition isn't just about crispy bacon and drizzled aioli — it's about feeding the community. Each $10 burger purchase supports Provision Packs, a local nonprofit fighting childhood hunger. Six new restaurants are joining the seasoned pros, all aiming to topple reigning champion Pumphouse BBQ. Want to get involved? Try at least five burgers, get your passport stamped, and maybe win prizes — or go all in and sample all 20 to snag a guaranteed $25 gift card. Burger Week is proof that sometimes, the best way to give back is one delicious bite at a time.

🏨 House Moves to Shift Tourism Tax

Florida’s House of Representatives approved a sweeping $5 billion tax package, with a controversial twist: starting in 2026, a chunk of the state’s “bed tax” (collected from hotel stays) will be redirected to offset property taxes. About 25% will still fund tourism marketing, but industry leaders fear a big hit to visitor promotion efforts. Critics warn the change could shrink Florida's vital tourism economy, while supporters highlight the urgent need for property tax relief. Negotiations between the House and Senate continue, as leaders hammer out the final shape of the state’s next budget.

🔥 Cowpen Fire in Flagler County Mostly Contained

A fast-moving wildfire, dubbed the “Cowpen Fire,” scorched over 250 acres in western Flagler County after igniting on April 24. Thanks to nonstop efforts from local fire crews, state forestry teams, and aerial water drops, the blaze was 90% contained by Friday morning. No injuries or evacuations were reported, but officials urge extreme caution: a burn ban remains in place for the region. Residents are reminded to clear flammable debris around homes and strictly avoid outdoor burning. Even a small spark can become a big problem in these dry conditions.

🏖️ Beachside Condo Market Faces Cloudy Forecast

Dreaming of a beachside condo? You might find plenty of listings, but beware: hefty fees and maintenance costs are taking a toll. After the Surfside collapse, new safety laws requiring stricter building inspections and higher reserves have sent insurance costs soaring. In Daytona Beach alone, nearly 900 condos sit for sale, often lingering months on the market. With average monthly dues between $800 and $1,200, and special assessments adding up, buyers are cautious. Experts say the market needs time to adjust, but in the meantime, patience (and a solid budget) is key for prospective condo owners.
