🧹Volusia Volunteers Sweep the Shoreline

After the fireworks faded and the sparklers sizzled out, dozens of Volusia County residents rolled up their sleeves to restore the beach's sparkle — the natural kind. Keep Volusia Beautiful organized a post-4th of July cleanup at Winterhaven Park in Ponce Inlet, with the county supplying gloves, grabbers, and buckets. This isn’t a one-off event either — it’s part of a continued push to protect local shorelines and raise awareness about litter and recycling.

On a typical cleanup day, volunteers gather around 30 to 40 pounds of debris, but holiday aftermath bumps that to about 50 to 60 pounds — mostly plastics, cigarette butts, and leftover fireworks. The community effort is essential for maintaining the hundreds of miles of coastline that welcome thousands of visitors each year.

As Volusia gears up for a nationwide coastal cleanup in September, this holiday cleanup is a reminder that preserving paradise takes teamwork.

🍝Zappi’s Says Arrivederci After 13 Years

A familiar flavor has bid farewell. Zappi’s Italian Garden, a beloved Beach Street staple in Daytona Beach, has officially closed its doors after 13 years of heartfelt service. The family-owned restaurant, opened in 2012 by Paul and Jennifer Zappitelli, announced its closure on social media, calling it a “difficult decision” and thanking patrons for years of support and shared memories.

Known for its cozy courtyard adorned with flowers and string lights, Zappi’s served up house-made pastas and Italian classics in a space that became a community favorite. The restaurant held a 4.4-star rating on Google and was often praised for its warm ambiance and welcoming service.

While the next chapter for the space remains undecided, the Zappitelli family continues to manage the Vacation Villas apartments above the restaurant. Social media was flooded with messages from loyal customers and staff sharing gratitude and well wishes, proving that Zappi’s left a mark as lasting as a good glass of Chianti.

🎆Fireworks Mishap Sparks Garage Fire in Margaritaville

While fireworks are meant to dazzle in the sky, one Daytona Beach celebration ended with a more grounded burst — and not in a good way. Firefighters responded to a garage fire on Beach Bum Boulevard in the Margaritaville subdivision, finding smoke and flames pouring from the structure. Fortunately, quick action confined the blaze to the garage, and no injuries were reported.

The cause? Improperly discarded fireworks material, according to the Daytona Beach Fire Department. It's a reminder that fireworks safety doesn't end when the show is over. The affected family was able to stay with friends while their home was being ventilated.

With holiday celebrations in full swing, officials urge residents to cool used fireworks completely before disposal. Let’s keep the sparks where they belong — in the sky, not the garage.
