🏃‍♂️ Ormond Beach’s Scott Baker to Wheel NYC Marathon

Ormond Beach resident and former Kent State hockey co-captain Scott Baker is gearing up for his first-ever marathon—on Nov. 2, he’ll participate in the New York City Marathon using a hand-cycle. Paralyzed from the waist down since a 1982 crash involving drag racers, Baker watched last year as others in wheelchairs conquered the course. He reflects, “It’s so inspiring watching those people… I’ve always been an athlete.”

With his sons Joey and Matthew and niece Carly forming part of “Team Reeve,” Scott’s goal is to raise $25,000 for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, a nonprofit supporting spinal cord injury research and those with mobility impairments. To date, they've raised about $5,450. Determined to conquer the marathon’s infamous hills, Baker trains daily in Florida—tackling 15–20 mile rides on a hand bike and even practicing on the Granada Bridge. “Here in Florida, it’s all flat… but the hills are pretty wicked though in the New York marathon,” he admits.

Scott says his motivation is deeply personal—his twins were born in Canada via IVF through spinal cord research efforts. “But the stuff they’re doing nowadays… if I can help anybody to not go through what I went through, that’s the whole goal.” Donate to support Scott’s journey:

🏡 🌱 Palm Coast Green-Builder Showcases Eco-Friendly Homes

TFlorida Green Building Construction specializes in creating healthier, energy-efficient homes using advanced Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) construction. These homes are built with large foam forms filled with reinforced concrete, resulting in solid, super-insulated walls that offer exceptional durability and energy performance.

Each home includes foam insulation and tightly sealed air ducts, essential features that contribute to third-party green certifications. This tight building envelope significantly reduces energy consumption—often by as much as 70%—and enhances indoor air quality by limiting allergens, mold, and bacteria. The sealed construction also minimizes outside noise, creating a quieter, more peaceful living environment.

ICF homes are built to withstand extreme conditions, including hurricanes and tornadoes, with steel-reinforced concrete walls, impact-resistant glass, and wind-mitigated roofing designed to resist winds up to 200 mph and provide up to four hours of fire resistance. These structures are also naturally resistant to mold and termites, reducing long-term maintenance and repair costs.

The combination of strength, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality makes these homes ideal for families seeking both comfort and sustainability. By choosing ICF construction, homeowners benefit from lower utility bills, enhanced safety, and a healthier living space—all while reducing their environmental footprint.

⚠️ Warm Water Warning - First 2025 Florida “Flesh-Eating” Bacteria Deaths Reported

Shifting the tone from celebration to caution, Florida health officials announced that 11 people have contracted Vibrio vulnificus so far this year, with four fatalities reported as of July 11 in Bay, Broward, Hillsborough, and St. Johns counties.

Vibrio vulnificus, commonly referred to as “flesh-eating” bacteria, thrives in brackish seawater. Infections occur through open wounds exposed to saltwater or by eating raw/undercooked seafood. The bacteria can rapidly destroy skin and soft tissue, sometimes necessitating amputations, and carries a mortality rate of about 20%. Nationwide, Vibrio infections cause roughly 80,000 illnesses and 100 deaths annually. Florida alone has recorded 178 deaths from this bacterium since 2008.

The Florida Department of Health advises immediate medical attention for anyone with wounds exposed to floodwaters or who develops symptoms after such exposure. Quick diagnosis and treatment are critical to prevent severe outcomes. High-risk individuals—those with compromised immunity, liver disease, or open wounds—should exercise extra precautions.
