🐢 Turtle Patrols Protect Hatchlings—And Sometimes Spot Gators

Meet the dedicated volunteers who rise before the sun to safeguard sea turtle nests along Volusia and Flagler beaches. These early risers comb the sands for signs of nesting activity, marking off spots with tape and signage to protect against beachgoers and machinery.

Lori Ottlein, a 23-year veteran of the Flagler Sea Turtle Patrol, shares stories of turtle nesting and even unexpected wildlife encounters—including a beach-bound alligator and a rare leatherback sighting.

Leatherbacks are showing up more this year, with eight nests in Flagler alone—a hopeful sign after a slower season impacted by beach renourishment projects. When these projects occur, the patrol ensures all nests are relocated to safety before work begins.

The turtle patrol isn't just about conservation—it's a front-row seat to the drama of nature: from mother turtles laying eggs to hatchlings making their moonlit dash to the sea.

🎗️ Hope in Motion: Holland Financial Supports Breast Cancer Awareness

Holland Financial of Ormond Beach has donated $5,000 to the American Cancer Society (ACS) to kickstart this year’s "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" fundraiser, set for October 25 at the Riverfront Esplanade in Daytona Beach. This meaningful gesture is part of the firm’s PlanStronger Together Program, aligning philanthropy with values that resonate deeply—especially for CEO David Holland and his wife Toni.

Toni Holland, a breast cancer survivor and avid runner, credits her fitness journey for helping her through treatment and recovery. Her diagnosis during the pandemic and her mother’s loss to the disease inspired her choice to undergo a double mastectomy. Now four years cancer-free, she’s running not just for herself but for all those touched by breast cancer.

The donation also reflects a personal and professional commitment. David noted that many clients and staff have been affected by cancer, impacting lives and finances alike. Holland Financial’s "Team Holland" will be on the ground for the fundraiser’s 5K walk, aiming to lead in participation and donations.

🚗 Sand, Sun, and... Steering Wheels? Daytona Debates Beach Driving Again

The idea of cars returning to a key stretch of Daytona Beach has resurfaced—specifically, from International Speedway Boulevard to the Ocean Center. Volusia County officials are revisiting the once-iconic tradition, though legal hurdles and environmental concerns are already revving up.

At a July 16 City Commission meeting, the conversation included not only beach driving but also whether dogs should be allowed on the sand north of Seabreeze Boulevard. While no official votes were cast, a majority of commissioners expressed support for allowing pups on the beach. Support for bringing cars back to the sand, however, was more mixed.

Restoring beach driving would require a legislative exception to a 1985 Florida law and approval from federal wildlife authorities concerned about sea turtle habitats. The city’s former deal with developers to end beach driving in exchange for nearby parking further complicates matters.

Despite the challenges, some local leaders and long-time residents support the nostalgic return. Commissioner Stacy Cantu recalled nighttime beach cruising fondly, and Paula Reed added, “That’s what makes us the world’s most famous beach.”

As legal teams deliberate, the question lingers: Is Daytona ready to put rubber back on the sand?
