🥒 D.B. Pickles Closes After Long Run in Ormond Beach
The lights have dimmed for good at D.B. Pickles, a longtime local favorite in Ormond Beach. The restaurant quietly closed its doors with a sign posted on July 20 and a late-night text message sent to employees announcing the closure. The message, shared widely on social media, paints a picture of financial hardship due to costly equipment repairs and a failing air conditioning system.
The full text from the owner read:
"Everyone, with great sadness, and my apologies for sending so late, I am informing you that we can no longer stay in business, the extraordinary costs of repairing, and lately the replacing of high value equipment, and now roof top AC replacement is just not feasible, the hole is just too deep, and no help is available, as I hoped I may find out today, and confirmed. I am sorry, I tried, and hoped to find a way to pull through the slow season, but it's just too high of a hill to climb. Thank you to all for your support and contributions to help make Pickles a success, many of you have so many years here, thank you!"
Employees were told to expect a court-appointed trustee as owner Michael DeKorte, who took over in 2022, intends to file for bankruptcy. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by three employees with a goal of raising $88,000 to support the restaurant's 22 staffers suddenly left without jobs or paychecks.

🛒 Aldi Readies New Ormond Beach Store for December Debut
While one door closes, another opens—eventually. Aldi, the ever-growing discount grocery chain, confirmed plans to open it’s second Ormond Beach location this December. The new store will occupy 24,081 square feet of the former Winn-Dixie space at the Ormond Beach Shopping Center on Granada Blvd.
The $1.7 million project will bring Aldi closer to the historic downtown area, offering a new shopping option for west side residents. It's part of the company’s aggressive expansion strategy, with goals to hit 800 stores nationwide by 2028.
Aldi's unique approach—think private-label products, tight floorplans, and a laser focus on low prices—has earned them a loyal fan base. And if you're looking for a job, this new location is expected to hire 15–20 staffers.
For shoppers, expect everything from organic meats to budget-friendly wines and weekly limited-time "Aldi Finds." Oh, and don’t forget their “Twice as Nice Guarantee.”

🐶 Hot Dog? How to Keep Your Pup Cool This Summer
Florida summers can be ruff—especially for our four-legged friends. Dr. Allison Bliss of Halifax Humane Society urges pet owners to be proactive to prevent heat-related issues.
First rule: avoid midday walks. Pavement can burn paw pads quickly, so if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Early mornings or evenings are ideal. And never leave your pet in a parked car—not even for a quick errand.
Hydration is key, so bring collapsible bowls and water bottles. If your home A/C goes out, turn on fans or let your pup splash in a kiddie pool. Cooling vests and mats are other helpful tools.
Dr. Bliss also suggests frozen treats like blueberries in Dixie cups and recommends rinsing your dog off after ocean swims to avoid skin irritation.
Bottom line: if you’re hot, your dog probably is too.

📚 Chill Out at Your Local Library
Need a break from the blazing Florida sun? Volusia County libraries are offering more than just books—they’re a free, air-conditioned oasis open to everyone.
With 14 locations across the county, officials are encouraging residents to come in, cool off, and stay safe. No library card is needed to take advantage of the chill zones during normal hours.
The county also reminds residents to drink plenty of water, avoid outdoor activity during peak heat, and keep a watchful eye on pets, who are especially vulnerable to heat-related illness.
