⭐ New Leader At B-C, Daytona Jungle, Ex-Ormond Cop Sentencing

Bethune-Cookman Google Business Profile

🎓 Bethune-Cookman Gets a New Leader

Bethune-Cookman University is turning a page with the appointment of Dr. Albert Mosley as its new president. The Daytona Beach-based HBCU has been without a permanent leader for four years, during which it faced accreditation challenges and student unrest. Mosley, who officially began on July 7, was selected from a national pool of 135 applicants. His previous post was as president of Morningside University in Iowa, where he launched forward-thinking programs in AI, cybersecurity, and aviation.

Mosley’s vision includes boosting enrollment (which already saw a 24% increase in 2024), addressing campus infrastructure, and connecting deeply with students and faculty. Inspired by founder Mary McLeod Bethune, Mosley emphasizes resilience and community. Students, including football players, have expressed optimism, calling Mosley energetic and encouraging. As the fall semester nears, the university hopes this marks a new era of stability and growth.

🌳 Jungle Comes to Daytona Beach

Get ready to explore the wild without leaving Daytona. The Daytona Aquarium and Rainforest Adventure officially opened its newest addition: the Rainforest Adventure exhibit. On July 24, owners Cliff and Margaret Grosvenor cut the ceremonial ribbon, inviting visitors into an immersive world of exotic wildlife.

The exhibit features a range of tropical residents, including rainbow lorikeets, a curious ringtailed lemur, playful small-clawed otters named Betty and Boop, and even a treat-loving toucan. There’s also a tayra, a lesser-known rainforest mammal, moving about its new home. Guests can interact with some creatures at the petting pool and wander through a carefully crafted environment that mimics a real rainforest.

Whether you’re a family with curious kids or just a nature lover in need of a mini-escape, this new exhibit adds a colorful and educational twist to Daytona's attractions. Perfect for a weekend outing or summer field trip.

🗳️ Former Ormond Beach Cop Faces Sentencing

A serious turn of justice is unfolding in Volusia County, where former Ormond Beach Police Officer Jacob Ryan Cannon awaits sentencing for a disturbing incident captured on video. The footage shows Cannon violently throwing a handcuffed woman, Shanna McRee, to the ground at the police station in December 2024. McRee suffered a deep head gash requiring seven stitches.

Internal investigations confirmed that Cannon used excessive force and lied during the inquiry. He resigned from the force on January 31, and has since pleaded openly, with no deal in place. As of July 21, he is in custody, and his sentencing will conclude on July 29 before Circuit Judge Kathryn Weston.

Cannon, 33, could face up to five years in prison for felony battery. The case has drawn attention for its implications on police accountability and the treatment of detainees. McRee's injury and the subsequent investigation have become a flashpoint in the local community, raising questions about law enforcement standards and oversight.
