💧Volusia County Rolls Out Flood Mitigation Newsletter
Need a better handle on stormwater and flood protection? Volusia County is launching a monthly newsletter starting in August to keep residents in the loop on flood mitigation strategies and stormwater projects. It's a must-read for anyone wanting to understand what the county is doing to protect homes and streets from heavy downpours and rising waters.
The newsletter will spotlight everything from drainage maintenance schedules and infrastructure improvements to project updates funded by Transform386. Homeowners will also get practical advice on how to flood-proof their properties.
For those who prefer their updates in email form instead of digging through government websites or scrolling social media, this initiative promises timely, actionable insights straight to your inbox. Want in? Sign up at www.volusia.org/stormwaternewsletter.

🌊 Oceanic Red Alert: Marine Heat Waves Signal Potential Climate Tipping Point
The oceans threw a scorching tantrum in 2023 — 96% of their surface endured record-shattering marine heat waves. According to a new study published in Science, the scale, duration, and intensity of these heat events are unlike anything seen before. Some experts suggest the oceans may be heading toward a new "normal," with irreversible shifts in ecosystems and temperature baselines.
Most of the overheating took place in the North Atlantic and Pacific regions, with one heat wave lasting an astounding 525 days. Researchers blame a cocktail of culprits, including El Niño, increased solar radiation, weaker winds, and shifting ocean currents — all of which could be linked to climate change. The possibility of interacting feedback loops intensifying this trend makes it all the more concerning.
Not only does this warming endanger marine life and coastal economies, but it also weakens the ocean’s ability to store carbon, potentially accelerating climate change. “The ocean has a long memory,” says researcher Tianyun Dong — and this hot flash might be one we’ll remember for centuries.

🦞It’s (Mini) Lobster Time in Florida!
Florida’s highly anticipated spiny lobster mini-season — also known as the sport season — kicks off July 30 and 31, offering 48 hours of crustacean chaos before the regular season begins August 6. This short window allows enthusiasts to double their daily catch (12 lobsters in most areas), but only if they follow the rules.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reminds divers to carry their measuring devices, leave egg-bearing females alone, and never separate the tail from the body while still at sea. Violating these laws can lead to serious fines — or worse, felony charges.
This brief but busy event brings in 1.5 to 2 million pounds of lobster recreationally each year. Commercially, the fishery nets over $40 million annually. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a first-timer with a license and a dream, this mini-season is your chance to dive in — literally.

🥗Ham Salad Alert: Listeria Concerns Spark Recall

Photo: USDA
Before you dip into that tub of ham salad, check the label. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for Reser’s Fine Foods and Molly’s Kitchen ready-to-eat ham salad products due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination in breadcrumbs used during production.
The affected items include 12-oz and 5-lb tubs with sell-by dates in late August and early September. No illnesses have been reported yet, but Listeria poses serious health risks, especially to older adults, immunocompromised individuals, and pregnant women.
The FSIS urges consumers to discard these products or return them to the point of purchase. If you've already eaten some and feel flu-like symptoms, seek medical attention right away and mention the possible exposure to Listeria.
Stay safe, and maybe swap that ham salad for something with fewer breadcrumbs.
