🌀 Tropics on the Move: Three Systems Being Watched

It’s been a quiet start to the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, but that calm might not last. As of Sunday, August 3, the National Hurricane Center is eyeing three developing weather systems. The most immediate is Invest 95L, currently spinning a few hundred miles east of North Carolina and drifting away from land. Though its cyclone chances sit at 50%, it doesn't pose a direct threat at this time.

Meanwhile, a large tropical wave off the coast of Africa is forecast to move westward early this week, adding to the list of potential developments. Another low-pressure system could form off the Southeastern U.S. coast in the coming days. If any of these systems gain tropical storm status, the next name in line is “Dexter.”

With hurricane season peaking between August and October, the USA TODAY Network is keeping a close eye on all formations — in English and Spanish. So if you're in Florida, it might be a good time to review your storm prep checklist.

🍽️ New Eats and Fond Farewells in Daytona

The Daytona and Flagler Beach restaurant scene saw plenty of turnover in July, with new flavors arriving and old favorites saying goodbye.

New Restaurants:

  • The Caribbean Buffet (Daytona Beach Shores) – Filling the former Red Lobster space with jerk chicken, oxtail, and goat curry.

  • Peggy’s Country Kitchen (Edgewater) – Reopened with a fresh look and a menu mashup of classic favorites and Pappas Drive-In specials.

  • Shawarma Mediterranean Cuisine (Daytona Beach Shores) – A five-star newcomer offering chicken shawarma, lamb chops, and creamy hummus.

Closures:

  • A1A Scoops (Flagler Beach) – A vegan gelato dream that lasted six months.

  • Alfie’s Restaurant (Ormond-by-the-Sea) – A beloved spot saying goodbye after nearly four decades.

  • D.B. Pickles (Ormond Beach) – Closed due to equipment costs and financial strain.

  • Soda Waves (Ormond Beach) – The soda fountain shop closed but hopes to “resurface” in the future.

  • Zappi’s Italian Garden (Daytona Beach) – A local Italian staple ended a 13-year run with heartfelt farewells.

From Caribbean buffets to Mediterranean bites, and the bittersweet end of longtime favorites, the local food landscape continues to evolve.
