🐬 Marineland’s Future in Choppy Waters

Marineland Dolphin Adventure is still splashing—but its long-term outlook is anything but smooth sailing. The oceanfront attraction, perched between Flagler and St. Johns counties, remains open despite its parent company, The Dolphin Company, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and placing the historic facility up for sale.

Founded in 1938, Marineland was once the world’s first oceanarium and even played backdrop to Hollywood classic films. But more recent headlines involve a worrying track record in animal welfare, especially after five dolphins died at a sister park. Now, the property is listed as a “distress sale” with no asking price, and potential buyers are already sniffing around. The site could remain a marine park—or morph into condos or a hotel, depending on who wins the bid.

Meanwhile, locals worry not only about the fate of the 17 dolphins and marine animals but also about plans to transform the tranquil town of 16 into a resort complex. A proposed development sparked protests and nearly 10,000 petition signatures.

With a bankruptcy hearing on the horizon and the town's future up in the air, this coastal treasure faces murky waters ahead.

🌀 Hurricane Milton Recovery Funds Now Available

Residents of Volusia County still feeling the impact of Hurricane Milton can now apply for crucial recovery aid. Thanks to HUD’s approval of the county’s $133.5 million action plan, the Transform386 Hurricane Milton Homeowner Recovery Program is officially live.

Through this initiative, eligible homeowners can apply for help with repairs, replacements, and even voluntary buyouts for homes in high-risk flood areas. There’s also support for those seeking funding matches with FEMA or Elevate Florida mitigation programs.

To qualify, homeowners must meet income guidelines—specifically, households must earn no more than 80% of the area median income. Priority is given to households with vulnerable members like children, seniors, or people with disabilities.

Applications opened on Friday, Aug. 1, and can be submitted online at www.transform386.org. For those unable to apply online, in-person help is available by appointment. Call 386-943-7029 or email [email protected] for assistance.

Don’t wait—these funds are a vital step toward rebuilding after the storm.

❄️ Keep Your Cool: Summer A/C Survival Tips

Florida’s summer heat doesn’t mess around, and neither does One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating. In the midst of their busiest season, technician Kamal Ehiemua is sharing pro tips to keep your A/C humming.

Top of the list? Clean your air filter and clear your drain line regularly. Beyond that, Ehiemua advises homeowners to let the pros handle it—especially anything involving electrical components or system pressure.

“We never ever would recommend a homeowner to do this themselves,” he cautions. “We don’t want anybody getting hurt.”

Annual maintenance checks are also highly recommended. These routine tune-ups help catch small issues before they become sweat-soaked emergencies.

So if your A/C is starting to wheeze—or if you’d rather not wait for that moment—it’s time to book that maintenance visit and stay ahead of the heat.

🔁 Second Chance Job Fair Connects Inmates with Opportunity

A fresh start could be just around the corner for inmates at the Volusia County Correctional Facility. On Thursday, Aug. 7, from 9 to 11 a.m., the facility will host its fourth Second Chance Job Fair, designed to match inmates nearing release with eager employers.

More than 25 companies are participating in this growing event, now relocated to a larger venue to meet demand. It's part of a year-old initiative aimed at reducing recidivism while helping businesses find committed workers.

In partnership with the Port Orange South Daytona Chamber of Commerce, the fair also gives media a chance to speak directly with participants and organizers to see this reintegration effort in action.

For more information, media representatives can contact Pat Kuehn at [email protected].
