🚸 Back to School with High Hopes and Nautical Themes

Volusia County teachers are back in the classroom prepping for the 2025-2026 school year, and schools like Pine Trail Elementary are taking the “all hands on deck” approach—literally. Principal Charles Bynum greeted returning staff with a nautical-themed welcome, reinforcing the school’s “row in the same direction” motto. With 51 first days under his belt (including his own as a student), Bynum is focused on maintaining Pine Trail’s hard-earned “A” grade by upholding “high expectations.”

Parents can meet teachers this Friday, August 8, at various elementary schools across the district, with staggered times based on location and grade. This year also brings good news: all students will continue receiving free breakfast and lunch.

Planning to shop last-minute? Florida’s back-to-school sales tax holiday runs through August 31. And don’t forget: a new law now bans elementary and middle school students from using cell phones during the school day.

⛽ Gas Station Approval Sparks Community Concern

Despite pushback from residents, the Ormond Beach City Commission voted 4-1 to uphold a site plan for a new Circle K gas station on South Nova Road. Local resident Amber Bobak spearheaded an appeal, citing environmental and public safety risks and a lack of community support. Unfortunately for opponents, the zoning and legal framework offered little wiggle room—Circle K’s plans met all required conditions under the city’s land use code.

City commissioners acknowledged Bobak’s advocacy, with even those voting in favor expressing regret that they couldn’t do more to stop it. The sole "no" vote came from Mayor Jason Leslie, as a show of support for Bobak’s efforts.

The proposed station, if built, will become the third at the Hand Avenue and Nova Road intersection, fueling further frustrations from nearby residents. Bobak is continuing her fight through a pending permit appeal with the St. Johns River Water Management District.

💧Legionnaires’ Disease Isn’t in Florida… Yet

While New York City battles a Legionnaires’ outbreak centered in Harlem, Floridians can breathe easy—for now. There are no reported cases in the state as of early August, but history tells us to stay alert. The Sunshine State regularly sees over 400 cases a year, with numbers typically rising between August and October.

Legionnaires’ is a form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, which thrive in warm water environments like cooling towers and air conditioning systems. It’s not contagious, but it can be dangerous, especially for older adults and those with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms include cough, fever, muscle aches, and shortness of breath—along with occasional confusion and gastrointestinal issues. Officials urge vigilance, particularly around large buildings with central cooling systems, as these often harbor the bacteria.

Florida may not be facing an outbreak yet, but with the seasonal uptick looming, awareness remains key.
