🌪 Volusia County Puts Hurricane Plans to the Test
With the heart of hurricane season fast approaching, Volusia County has been flexing its storm muscles. On July 24, the Emergency Operations Center in Daytona Beach became the stage for a full-scale hurricane preparedness exercise. County officials teamed up with local municipalities and state partners to simulate everything from evacuation orders to post-storm recovery.
The drills included tough decision-making, real-time coordination, and tackling simulated challenges like flooded roads and downed power lines. “This exercise gave us a chance to simulate the complexities of a major storm,” said Emergency Management Director Clint Mecham.
Residents are encouraged to use this as a cue to check their own storm plans, stock up on essentials, and keep multiple ways to stay informed. A little prep now can make all the difference when the winds pick up.

🦖 MOAS Bids Farewell to the Children’s Museum—For Now
After 17 years of playful exploration, the Children’s Museum at MOAS closed its doors on Aug. 8—but only to make room for something even bigger. Thanks to a record-breaking $150 million endowment from Cici and J. Hyatt Brown, MOAS is kicking off a major expansion.
In October, the space will temporarily transform into “Expedition: Dinosaur,” complete with animatronic dinos and fossil displays, while plans for a new two-story, 60,000-square-foot museum take shape. Beloved areas like the Tiny Tots section and the ever-popular Pizza Place will remain, ensuring kids still have familiar favorites to enjoy.
The museum’s leaders are asking for patience as they work toward what they’re calling the “Wow” building—designed to impress from the moment visitors arrive. Until then, it’s time to say goodbye to the old and get ready to be wowed by the new.

📞 Meet “Evelyn”—the Loan Scammer You Don’t Want to Call Back
If “Evelyn from Lending Union” has been leaving you urgent voicemails about your loan, don’t get too excited—she’s not real. The Better Business Bureau says the calls are part of a growing scam designed to trick you into handing over sensitive personal information.
The pitch sounds convincing: Evelyn claims your loan is almost approved, but she just needs to “confirm a couple quick things.” The goal? To snag your Social Security number, bank details, or other private data.
The BBB recommends verifying any loan details directly with your bank or lender, never giving personal information to unsolicited callers, and resisting the urge to call unknown numbers back. Sadly, scams like this cost Floridians over $1 billion in 2024 alone.
Bottom line: If Evelyn calls, let it go to voicemail—and then delete it.
