🌿 How Pierson Became the ‘Fern Capital of the World’
Move over oranges — in northwest Volusia County, ferns reign supreme. The quiet town of Pierson owes its green crown to Swedish immigrant Peter Pierson, who in 1904 received 10,000 asparagus plumosus fern plants from his brother in Connecticut. The plants thrived, and an industry was born.
After citrus freezes in the late 1800s devastated crops, farmers needed a new source of income. Fern proved not just resilient but lucrative, eventually expanding into leatherleaf fern production in the 1960s. By the early 2000s, Florida growers were generating $86 million in fern sales, with Pierson at the center of it all.
Generations of families, like the Hagstroms, helped the industry flourish, even shipping ferns internationally to places like Canada, Amsterdam, and Saudi Arabia. Today, the fern trade pumps roughly $50 million into the local economy annually.
Though it’s a niche market, Pierson’s lush oak hammocks and shaded ferneries stand as a living legacy — a reminder that sometimes the most unassuming plants can grow into something extraordinary.

🙏 A Calling to Serve: Roy Young Takes the Helm at Halifax Urban Ministries
Roy Young’s journey to becoming Halifax Urban Ministries’ new executive director started with a prayer — literally. The Ormond Beach resident first volunteered in HUM’s kitchen, plating up meals for the 400 people they serve daily. A pre-shift prayer reframed the work for him: it wasn’t just about food, but about feeding souls.
Young, who previously spent two decades preserving historic landmarks like Mount Vernon and Fallingwater, brings both leadership skills and a deep sense of faith to HUM — his first faith-based nonprofit role. He believes the job is a calling, one that blends community service with spiritual purpose.
His goals? Expand HUM’s reach, balance funding between grants and private donations, and perhaps even build another shelter for people discharged from hospitals with no home to return to. Above all, he’s focused on “people-ing” — connecting with everyone, from those in need to potential donors.
“Maybe God put me in the right place and even trained me,” Young said. Now, he’s ready to lead HUM into a new chapter of growth and outreach.

🚨 Tragic Collision on Granada Boulevard
Ormond Beach police are investigating a fatal crash that took place Saturday, Aug. 9, on one of the city’s busiest stretches — East Granada Boulevard, between Halifax Drive and Atlantic Avenue.
The collision between two vehicles shut down the area for several hours as first responders worked the scene. Both drivers were rushed to the hospital under trauma alerts, but one later died from their injuries. The other remains in serious condition.
Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved and say further details will be shared “as they become available and appropriate to share.”
The crash serves as a somber reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike — even on familiar roads.
