🌀 Tropical Storm Erin Gains Strength — Florida on Watch

All eyes are on Tropical Storm Erin as it barrels westward across the Atlantic with increasing force. The National Hurricane Center expects Erin to become the season's first hurricane—and possibly a major one—within 48 hours. Clocking in at 22 mph, the storm's exact path remains uncertain, but Florida residents are urged to get their hurricane kits ready and stay informed.

Meteorologists say it’s too soon to know how Daytona Beach, Volusia, or Flagler counties might be affected, but preparedness is key, especially with the peak of hurricane season upon us. Meanwhile, local beachgoers should be cautious of a moderate rip current risk, and brace for hot, sticky conditions with heat index values climbing up to 107°F later in the week.

Erin is expected to slow down and veer northwest in the coming days. Whether she makes landfall or just gives us a scare, it’s time to dust off those hurricane plans.

🥕 Ormond Beach Adds a Sunday Market to the Mix

Weekend plans just got a little tastier in Ormond Beach. Fountain Square Village has launched a new Sunday farmers market, open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 142 E. Granada Blvd. Organized by massage therapist Gabi Owens of Tranquil Healing, the market features a rotating cast of vendors offering everything from artisan soaps to sourdough loaves and local honey.

Inspired by the weekday timing of the long-running MainStreet market—which Owens could never attend when she worked in health care—this Sunday edition aims to be more accessible to the weekend crowd. With help from local women's business groups like Babes, Booze & Business and Biz Bestie, Owens handpicked the vendors, most of whom are new faces to the market scene.

And if that’s not enough, the plaza has also started “Wine Down Wednesdays” from 4 to 8 p.m.—an evening sip-and-shop experience with artisan goods.

🥪 125,000 Meals Served: Volusia’s Summer Food Program a Hit

As kids return to school, Volusia County is celebrating a major achievement: over 125,000 free meals served to children this summer. From June 2 to August 8, the county's Community Assistance Division coordinated a program across more than 70 sites—parks, libraries, and community centers—ensuring kids stayed nourished even while school was out.

Backed by funding from the USDA and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the initiative offered breakfast and lunch at no cost to anyone 18 and under. Community Assistance Director Carmen Hall credited the success to strong partnerships and volunteers who helped ensure no child went hungry.

This year’s program not only met federal nutrition standards but also offered parents peace of mind during those long summer weeks. It’s a quiet but crucial win for the community.
