🦁 New Leadership for the Lions Club

The Ormond-by-the-Sea Lions Club has welcomed a fresh slate of leaders for the 2025-2026 term. During their July 2 meeting, Volusia County Tax Collector Will Roberts officiated the installation of the new officers, including President Lion Aleta Dick and First Vice President Lion Jean Cerullo.

The group wasted no time getting involved—on July 4, they filled 100 welcome bags for dignitaries attending the 107th Lions International Convention in Orlando. Community service remains central to the club’s mission, and members continue to meet twice monthly to plan events and outreach efforts.

For more information or to get involved, locals can contact the club directly. Whether it’s a service project or stuffing welcome bags, the Lions are roaring into the new year with purpose.

This Lion Club meets on the first and third Wednesdays of every month. For more information, call 386-441-4421.

🏛️ Broker Battle in Ormond Beach

The Ormond Beach City Commission hit pause on picking a new broker to manage employee benefits, pushing the decision to Sept. 3. The city must choose between Brown and Brown, offering a flat $50,000 fee, and Foundation Risk Partners, proposing nearly double at $99,102. Both companies promise the same services—rate negotiations, claims analysis, and employee advocacy—but commissioners debated whether the higher fee could lead to long-term savings.

The decision was further complicated as two commissioners—Travis Sargent and Lori Tolland—abstained due to ties with Foundation Risk Partners. Others voiced concern about value vs. cost, noting Brown and Brown's deep local ties but questioning the shift from commission-based compensation to a flat fee.

With no urgency to decide immediately, commissioners opted to gather more data, including scorecards and service comparisons. The big question remains: Stick with familiarity and lower cost, or gamble on potential savings with a higher fee?

🐱 Cat Couture and Cuddles at the Ocean Center

Cat lovers, mark your calendars! The Daytona Beach Cat Show returns Sept. 13-14 at the Ocean Center, featuring over 100 competing cats, a feline agility course, and an irresistible cat costume contest. Hosted by the Cat Fanciers’ Association and the Cat Club of the Palm Beaches, this fur-filled weekend blends competition with cuddly adoption opportunities.

Expect judging in five rings, showcasing everything from championship breeds to lovable household pets. Last year’s winners included a bicolor Persian named Bailey and an Exotic short hair dressed like a sunflower.

Beyond the competition, attendees can adopt a new feline friend from local rescues. Tickets range from $10–$15, with family bundles and free entry for kids under 4. Just don’t forget to vote in the costume contest—because who doesn’t want to see a cat in a pirate outfit?

🌊 Erin Brings Heat and High Surf

As Hurricane Erin powers up in the Atlantic, forecasters are warning of dangerous rip currents and high surf along the Daytona and Flagler coastlines starting Monday, Aug. 18. While Erin is expected to stay offshore, its swells will bring surf up to 8 feet through midweek.

The National Weather Service has also issued a heat advisory for Friday, with heat index values topping 100 degrees. Officials urge beachgoers to stay hydrated, avoid solo swims, and only enter the ocean near staffed lifeguard towers.

Erin is projected to become a powerful Category 4 storm, with winds reaching up to 130 mph. Even if the skies are blue, don’t let your guard down—those waves could be deceptive and deadly.
