🔥 Firefighters Warn Against Frozen Fowl In Fryers

Frying a turkey this Thanksgiving? Orange County Fire Rescue has one word for you: caution. In a dramatic live demo, firefighters showed what happens when a frozen turkey meets hot oil — think big fireball.

Each year, firefighters respond to home fires caused by improperly prepared birds being lowered into fryers filled to the brim with overheated oil. This can lead to serious burns, explosions, and, if you're unlucky, a scorched driveway.

To stay safe, make sure your turkey is completely thawed and dry before frying. Keep the oil at 350°F and never, ever leave it unattended. Also, don’t pour the used oil down the drain — Orange County Utilities advises proper disposal to avoid clogged pipes and sewer issues.

The fire department hopes this sizzling demonstration sticks in your memory longer than Aunt Karen’s cranberry sauce. Click the link below to view video.

🦃 Thanksgiving Schedules in Volusia - What You Need to Know

Planning to hit the library, take the bus, or roll out the trash this Thanksgiving? Here’s your quick guide to what’s open, what’s not, and what’s running on fumes in Volusia County.

All Volusia County administrative offices will take a break from Wednesday, Nov. 26, through Friday, Nov. 28. Libraries will close early at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25, and stay closed through Friday, with normal hours resuming Saturday, Nov. 29.

Trash and recycling services in unincorporated areas are also hitting pause. No collections will take place on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, Nov. 27), but make-up service is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 29. Be sure to roll your bins curbside by 6 a.m. If you’re within city limits, check with your local provider for changes. Meanwhile, both the Tomoka Landfill and West Volusia Transfer Station will be closed Thursday, reopening Friday.

VoTran will offer limited service Thanksgiving Day, with select routes (1, 3, 4, 10, 15, 17) running on a Sunday schedule. Other routes, plus VoRide and New Smyrna Beach Flex, will be suspended.

💊 $2.6 Million in Opioid Settlement Funds Fuel 9 Local Initiatives

In a major step toward combating the opioid epidemic, the Volusia County Council has approved $2.6 million in opioid settlement funds to support nine local initiatives. The funding, greenlit during the Nov. 18 council meeting, will enhance treatment, prevention, emergency response, and community education efforts across the county.

The investment will expand hospital-based care, recovery peer support, public outreach, youth prevention programs, and first responder resources. Recipients include AdventHealth DeLand, SMA Healthcare, Volusia Recovery Alliance, and several city governments and nonprofits. Each program was selected through a competitive application process evaluated by the Opioid Abatement Advisory Board.

This is the fourth round of opioid settlement funding for Volusia County, bringing the total investment to over $10 million. The money comes from legal settlements with opioid manufacturers and distributors, aimed at supporting communities hit hardest by the crisis.

The hope? That these initiatives will not only save lives but also connect residents to the resources they need for long-term recovery and resilience.
