🎲 O.B. Truck Stop Trickery: Driver Loses $600 in Card Scam

A long-haul nap turned into a long con for a 34-year-old semi-truck driver from Michigan, who was scammed out of $600 while resting at an Ormond Beach truck stop. According to police, the driver was approached by a man claiming a local group was celebrating truckers with cash giveaways—offering to match any money shown, up to a supposed $300,000 jackpot.

Tempted by the promise, the driver withdrew $600 from an ATM and returned to the lot, only to be swiftly pulled into a confusing card game scam. Within moments, another man snatched the money and claimed the driver had lost. When the driver protested, one of the men directed him to speak to a woman in another vehicle. While he turned to look, the group vanished.

The scam didn’t end there: a later confrontation led to a scuffle where one of the suspects slapped the driver’s phone out of his hand before fleeing in a white Chevy Impala with Ohio plates. Police are still investigating, and no arrests have been reported.

🐘 Manatee Season Arrives at Blue Spring

Serenity reigns just inland where the manatees are back at Blue Spring State Park. As of Thursday, 78 of these gentle giants have taken refuge in the park’s toasty 72-degree waters, a seasonal haven for the endangered Florida manatee.

Each winter, manatees migrate to the spring to escape the chill, buoyed by the 102 million gallons of geothermal water flowing daily into the St. Johns River. Though they look rugged, manatees are surprisingly sensitive to cold, making warm refuges like Blue Spring crucial to their survival.

The park has closed all water activities to accommodate the visiting manatees, though land-based viewing and boat tours remain open. It’s a great time for nature lovers to observe these aquatic mammals—just remember: no touching. Manatees are protected under state and federal law, and disturbing them is a no-go.

Ongoing research at Blue Spring has been tracking manatees since 1978, helping monitor their health and migration. With threats like habitat loss and boat strikes still looming, conservation efforts remain vital—even as Florida’s manatee population continues to slowly recover.
