🗳️ “Trump County” Push Gathers Momentum

A Hammock couple is pushing to redraw Florida’s map with the creation of a 68th county—Trump County. Jen Herold and her husband Rob Jarowski launched the initiative with a petition on November 18, aiming to carve out a new coastal county named after former President Donald Trump. It would include portions of St. Johns, Volusia, and all of Flagler County’s barrier island communities, from Anastasia Island to Ponce Inlet.

At the heart of their motivation is a growing frustration with Flagler County’s beach management plan and the proposed MSBU tax, which Hammock residents argue unfairly burdens them. Herold says the goal isn’t political showmanship but rather a practical attempt at tax relief, infrastructure improvements, and local economic growth.

While it’s still in the early stages, the Trump County effort has sparked national attention—and plenty of local debate. Florida hasn’t added a county in a century, and doing so would require legislative action and a public referendum. But Herold insists, “We’re not satisfied with the status quo.”

⚖️ Drug Dealers Take Note: Palm Coast Man Indicted for Fentanyl-Linked Murder

In a case that underscores the deadly consequences of fentanyl, 38-year-old Joseph Bourke Jr. of Palm Coast has been indicted for first-degree murder after allegedly selling the drug to a man who fatally overdosed. The victim, 42-year-old Brian Seaverns, was found unresponsive in his Palm Coast apartment on February 27.

Investigators traced the fentanyl back to a Daytona Beach motel where Bourke allegedly sold it to Seaverns the day before his death. A search turned up drugs, paraphernalia—and Bourke’s phone. The investigation, involving multiple law enforcement units and surveillance evidence, culminated in a grand jury indictment on November 7.

Bourke’s criminal history is extensive, including charges of robbery, DUI, and previous drug offenses. Now, facing the most severe charge yet, he remains in custody without bond.

Sheriff Rick Staly didn’t mince words: “This dirtbag needs to go to prison for a very long time.”

🛒 Sprouts and Aldi Stir Up Grocery Game in Ormond & Daytona

Grocery store fans, rejoice: Volusia County’s food scene is getting a serious upgrade. Following Trader Joe’s bustling debut in Daytona Beach earlier this month, two more major chains—Sprouts Farmers Market and Aldi—are stepping in to satisfy growing demand.

Sprouts will open its first Volusia County store in late February 2026 at the Shoppes at Williamson Crossing in Daytona Beach. Across the county line in Ormond Beach, Aldi is preparing to open by year’s end at the site of the former Winn-Dixie on Granada Boulevard. It’s a move that mirrors their strategy across the region, including planned locations in DeBary and Daytona Beach Shores.

Why the surge? Population growth and rising household incomes are changing the retail landscape. Commercial real estate pros say grocery giants like Harris Teeter and even Fresh Market are eyeing the area, once considered too modest for upscale stores. With Daytona’s median income now competitive and new luxury developments on the rise, the grocery wars are just getting started.
