🐾 Heartbreak in Ormond Beach: Coyote Snatches Family Dog
A devastating reminder about local wildlife hit close to home in Ormond Beach when Lynn Blanford’s beloved Yorkie, Macy, was taken by a coyote during their early morning walk. Blanford, who had rescued Macy nearly 15 years ago, described the encounter as shockingly fast. One moment, they were on their familiar route; the next, Macy had been ripped from her leash and carried off.
“She was turning 17,” Blanford said, her voice heavy with grief. “I never imagined this would happen in front of me.”
Coyotes have been a known presence in the neighborhood, with residents reporting frequent sightings. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission even installed warning signs due to the increasing concerns. Sadly, Macy's case underscores just how bold and dangerous these encounters can become.
FWC officers later recovered Macy’s body in the nearby woods. Now, Blanford is urging neighbors to remain vigilant and keep pets close—especially during low-visibility hours.

🎁 Margarita Ball Brings Holiday Joy to Thousands of Children
The spirit of giving was on full display this month as nearly 5,000 toys were collected at the annual Margarita Balls in Volusia and Flagler counties. Volusia’s event, held at the Ocean Center, drew hundreds of generous attendees and collected an impressive 4,130 toys. Meanwhile, Flagler’s smaller-scale but mighty celebration added another 800 toys to the count.
Organized by the Margarita Societies of both counties, the invite-only events ask each guest to bring at least $200 worth of toys as their entry fee. And they delivered—often bringing multiple large bags stuffed with gifts.
Cindy Evans, who serves as a director for both societies, says the community never fails to impress. “It’s just us paying for the party and asking people to bring toys,” she noted. Over the years, this tradition has supplied more than 100,000 gifts to children across Central Florida.
The toys go directly to local nonprofits, ensuring they land in the hands of families who need them most during the holiday season.

🍽️ Thanksgiving Eve: Hot Meals and Full Hearts in Volusia
While many were prepping feasts at home, Halifax Urban Ministries was on the move delivering hot meals to those in need across Volusia County on Thanksgiving Eve. Their mobile pantry, a daily lifeline for many, distributed 225 full meals—complete with dessert—to hungry residents.
“This is seven days a week,” said driver Jason Brooks. “It’s rewarding to know everyone’s getting taken care of.”
At Morning Star Baptist Church, volunteers like Diane Goldie and Jan Jasanis spent Wednesday afternoon plating food and lifting spirits. “Be thankful for what you have,” Goldie said, reflecting on the growing need in the community. Executive Director Roy Young emphasized the group’s mission: “People matter to God, and feeding them is a big part of what we do.”
In a year where rising costs and uncertainty over SNAP benefits left many struggling, Halifax Urban Ministries stood as a beacon of compassion.
