Concept Drawing-The Brown Website
🎨The Museum of Arts and Sciences closed its doors Sunday evening — not because it's finished, but because it's becoming something more. The museum is transforming into the Cici & Hyatt Brown Museum of Art, Science & History, known going forward as The Brown. The closure kicks off a massive behind-the-scenes project: cataloging, photographing, and custom-crating all 30,000-plus objects in the collection. A new building along Nova Road will connect to the existing museum and incorporate access to Tuscawilla Preserve. Programming continues in the meantime through partnerships with Embry-Riddle, the Ocean Center, and the Daytona Beach Shores Community Center. The Lohman Planetarium remains open for ticketed events. First community program: April 21 at the Shores Community Center. More at moasfuture.org and thebrownmuseum.org.

👮♀️Two juvenile girls in Ormond Beach are facing criminal mischief charges after a grocery store visit on North Nova Road turned into an unauthorized science experiment. Surveillance footage showed the pair opening containers of glue, shampoo, shaving cream, petroleum jelly, and hair oil and spreading the contents across the baby aisle. They were in the store about half an hour before leaving. They did pay for their other purchases that day — heavy whipping cream, half-and-half, and some deli items — which raises questions about the recipe. Two days later, a manager recognized the nine-year-old when she returned with her grandmother. The girl told police they had been trying to make slime. The store's records also showed a similar incident two weeks prior, causing $136 in damage. Total damage this time: just under $500. The girl has been trespassed from the store.
✦
💲A city audit of the Daytona Beach Fire Department has turned up some uncomfortable findings about its take-home vehicle program. At one point, fourteen employees were assigned city-owned vehicles — covered by taxpayers for fuel, maintenance, and car washes — with no logs kept to track usage. Several vehicles weren't visibly marked as city property, and some assigned employees live outside city limits entirely. Without mileage records, the city also can't determine how much use was personal versus work-related, which could carry IRS implications. Since the draft audit was released, the number of take-home vehicles has been reduced from fourteen to ten, and most now display city logos. Auditors are recommending annual eligibility reviews and proper mileage tracking going forward.

🐥The hummingbirds are back, and your yard could be their next stop. Ruby-throated hummingbirds — the only species that breeds in Florida — have been spotted across the state as of late March. Males arrive first; females follow about a week later. These penny-weight, three-inch marvels winter in Mexico and Central America before making the trip back each spring. To attract them, plant tubular flowers in red, orange, or pink — native hibiscus and coral honeysuckle work especially well. Feeders are welcome now too; the birds feed most actively at dawn and dusk. Track local sightings in real time at hummingbirdcentral.com. Florida is saying goodbye to its human snowbirds and hello to much more colorful ones.
How to attract hummingbirds to your yard
Plant red, orange, or pink tubular flowers — try native hibiscus or coral honeysuckle
Space plants apart so birds have room to hover
Put feeders out now; birds feed at dawn and dusk
