Volusia County Sheriff

🩺 Fake Credentials, Real Charges

Joseph Kinney, 55, was arrested in Volusia County after deputies say he tried to land a nursing job using someone else’s license. The Volusia Sheriff's Office said Kinney's own credentials had been revoked due to a long history of misconduct, including drug diversion and providing false information.

Authorities were tipped off when a hiring manager noticed inconsistencies in Kinney's application. Undercover detectives set up a fake interview at AdventHealth, where Kinney was promptly arrested. He's now facing two counts of practicing healthcare without a license and is being held on a $20,000 bond.

Kinney, formerly licensed in Alabama, California, and Florida, is said to have applied to as many as 15 jobs, landing brief gigs at two facilities in Orange and Seminole counties. A broader investigation is underway with the help of federal health officials.

It’s a troubling case that underscores the importance of vigilance in healthcare hiring — and just how far some are willing to go to dodge their past.

📘 Smart Over Heart: A Financial Reality Check

David Holland, CEO of Holland Financial, just released the first book in his new PlanStronger series. Titled Smart Over Heart, the book isn't about investment strategies but about the emotional side of money — how our feelings, not our spreadsheets, often lead us astray.

Holland pulls from nearly 30 years of advising clients and focuses on issues like financial scams, generational planning, and how emotional decision-making can derail even the most logical plans. His central message: be wise, not reactive.

The book is filled with real-life stories (and some inspired by real events) designed to help readers avoid common pitfalls. Holland wrote the book every Friday for three years, with editing help from his wife Toni and his team. And yes, it’s aimed at everyone — not just those with deep pockets.

🕯️ Ormond Beach Honors Charlie Kirk

On Friday, Sept. 12, nearly 300 people gathered in Ormond Beach to remember conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was tragically killed earlier that week during a college event in Utah. The candlelight vigil, organized by locals Markala Oman and Travis Limbocker, included a walk across the Granada Bridge and a peaceful ceremony at Cassen Park.

Despite some rain, the energy was reflective and united. Organizers emphasized Kirk’s legacy and the importance of civil discourse. Oman, emotionally moved by the turnout, shared that Kirk’s influence was deeply personal to her.

Her message to the community: disagreement should never lead to violence. "We deserve to live in a world where you can speak your truth... without harm,” she said, expressing hope for a more open and respectful society for future generations.

The vigil was a testament to community solidarity in the face of national tensions — and a reminder of the value of empathy, even in ideological divides.

⚾ From Dance Floors to Dugouts: VSC's Big League Leap

Deanna Newkirk’s journey from NFL cheerleader to baseball facility owner may not be traditional, but it’s certainly inspiring. Driven by her son’s love for baseball, the Volusia Sports Center (VSC) owner has turned a multi-sport facility into a regional hub for youth baseball development.

In partnership with Sean Harmon, president of Showcase Baseball Academy (SBA) Clubhouse, VSC now hosts SBA Elite — a high-level travel league with former college and professional athletes on the coaching staff. Scott Moss, a DeLand High alum and former MLB pitcher, serves as pitching coach and director.

Newkirk, who will pass ownership to Harmon in 2026, remains focused on community impact. She recently launched a project to build a new outdoor turf infield — with lighting, fencing, and more — but still needs $12,000 in donations to complete it. The space is already fostering standout players like 11-year-old K.J. Schoeps and Newkirk’s own son, Dallas.

“It's more than a batting cage,” Harmon says. “We’re building a future here.”
