🚁 Multi-Agency Drill Prepares for Ocean Emergencies

Volusia County's first responders recently put their emergency response capabilities to the test with a full-scale ocean rescue exercise off the coast of Daytona Beach. The Volusia Sheriff's Office joined the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in simulating the aftermath of a commercial airliner crashing into the Atlantic Ocean. Rescue boats, helicopters and drones were all deployed as crews practiced locating and rescuing victims from the water. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said while such incidents are rare, training alongside partner agencies helps responders prepare for unpredictable emergencies. He noted that every exercise strengthens communication, coordination and decision-making so crews are ready to "adjust, adapt and overcome" when real-life situations demand it.
