🍽️ Volusia County Sheriff’s SNAP Drive Today
With the federal government shutdown straining resources, the Volusia Sheriff's Office is stepping in with a food distribution event today, Sunday, Nov. 9, at Daytona International Speedway. From 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., families in need—particularly the 38,000 Volusia County residents who rely on SNAP—can pick up groceries at the NASCAR Drive entrance. Attendees should bring their SNAP ID cards.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood partnered with the Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties, Daytona International Speedway, and Walmart to organize the event, with funding support from the Volusia Sheriff’s Foundation and Youth Foundation. Together, they’ve raised $15,000 to supply essentials like pasta, peanut butter, and canned goods.
Chitwood, never one to mince words, quoted Ronald Reagan while criticizing the federal inaction: “The government is the problem.” He called for community solidarity, emphasizing support for those left behind by bureaucracy.

🏥 Halifax Health Expands ER Access
A new chapter in emergency care has arrived for Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach residents. Halifax Health has opened its newest freestanding emergency room, located on Hand Avenue—the only one of its kind in Daytona Beach.
Halifax Health CEO Jeff Feasel emphasized that the facility aims to bring expert medical help closer to home, providing quicker response times and greater choice for local residents. “Providing high-quality, timely healthcare close to home is central to our mission,” Feasel said in a press release.
As a community-owned health system, Halifax Health says it remains committed to meeting the evolving needs of the region with “excellence, compassion, and efficiency.”
Whether it’s for minor injuries or urgent situations, this facility is expected to ease the load on hospital emergency rooms while ensuring fast, reliable care.

🚨 Vehicular Homicide Charges Filed in A1A Crash
The tragic collision on A1A in Ormond-by-the-Sea has now resulted in two fatalities and a double vehicular homicide charge for the man behind the wheel. Scott March, 63, of Findlay, Ohio, was arrested Monday, Nov. 3, following a fatal crash that took place on Nov. 1.
Florida Highway Patrol reports that March was attempting to pass in a no-passing zone when he struck a Jeep carrying Thomas and Julia Lauck. Both were ejected from their vehicle. Thomas, 72, died at the scene. Julia, 73, succumbed to her injuries on Thursday, Nov. 6.
Originally charged with one count of vehicular homicide, March now faces a second charge in light of Julia’s passing. The crash remains under investigation.
It’s a sobering reminder of the consequences of reckless driving—and the enduring impact on families and communities.
