🏗️ A New Vision for Faith: First United Methodist Plans Ministry Center

First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach is looking to the future with a plan to replace its existing gathering building with a modern 23,000-square-foot Ministry Center. The new building will link to the current sanctuary and offer upgraded tech and flexible spaces designed to deepen community connections. A neighborhood meeting will take place at the church (336 S. Halifax Drive) on April 9 at 6 p.m. to discuss the proposal, which still needs a special exception approval from the city. Church leaders say the project is about more than bricks and mortar—it’s about creating space to grow together in faith.

🗣️ When Silence Speaks Volumes: Slur at Council Meeting Draws Criticism

At a recent Volusia County Council meeting, a public speaker used a racial slur during his remarks—prompting an uncomfortable silence from council members and attendees alike. Civil rights leaders condemned the lack of response, calling it a missed opportunity to denounce hate speech. Chairman Jeff Brower later called the comment “repulsive” and said he would speak with legal advisors about setting clearer standards for future public comments. The situation has sparked a wider debate over free speech, decorum, and leadership in public forums. Some council members said they didn’t fully register the slur at the time; others admitted regret for not reacting. Local activists argue that silence can be interpreted as complicity and are calling for more accountability going forward.

Florida lawmakers are advancing a bill that would require parental consent for minors to receive contraception or STI treatment—sparking emotional testimony from survivors of sexual abuse who say the law could put vulnerable teens at greater risk. SB 1288, sponsored by Sen. Erin Grall, has passed a Senate committee despite opposition from health advocates and some Republicans. Critics say the bill undermines minors’ access to essential care, especially those in unsafe family situations. Supporters argue it restores parental authority. The bill also bans biofeedback machines in schools and places stricter requirements on student health surveys. While lawmakers acknowledged the painful stories shared by advocates, many still voted in favor, prompting backlash from those who say the bill fails to reflect the realities many teens face.

Do you think it makes sense to require teens to get parental consent for contraceptives?

🚨 Allegations Rock Holly Hill: Former Officers Accused of Harassment

A federal lawsuit is shining a harsh light on the City of Holly Hill, accusing former Police Chief Jeff Miller and former Capt. Chris Yates of years of sexual harassment in the workplace. The plaintiff, a former employee, claims she was subjected to repeated and escalating misconduct, including physical contact and inappropriate comments. The city is being sued for allegedly failing to act despite being aware of the behavior—and for hiring Miller despite past complaints of harassment during his tenure with the Volusia Sheriff's Office. The city has not issued a formal response but acknowledged awareness of the suit. The plaintiff’s attorney praised her client’s courage, stating there’s no place for this type of behavior in today’s workplace, especially within law enforcement.
