Fern & Fable Hosts Campaign to Combat Book Bans in Florida

Fern & Fable Books

Fern & Fable Books, in Ormond Beach, partnered with Citizens for Truth and Justice in Education (CTJE) to host a kickoff event for Banned Books Week, a national campaign against literary censorship. The event featured the “Break the Tape” campaign, launched in collaboration with the National Coalition Against Censorship and the Kids' Right to Read Network. Sheila Zinkerman of CTJE, after partnering with California’s Golden State Readers, helped bring the campaign to Florida, distributing caution-taped flyers to raise awareness about book bans.

During the 2022-2023 school year, Volusia County faced 89 book objections and two removals, spotlighting the ongoing issue. Rayna Dunlop, owner of Fern & Fable, emphasized the need to explore books fully rather than focusing on controversial sections, while Volusia County School Board candidate Cassie Gonyer highlighted the importance of diverse representation in literature. As Banned Books Week continues, local advocates remain committed to protecting the freedom to read.

Seabreeze FFA Raises $5,000 at Annual Welcome-Back Dinner

Seabreeze FFA raised nearly $5,000 during its annual welcome-back dinner on September 18, marking the event’s third year of growth. With over 260 attendees, the evening featured a barbecue dinner, a live cake auction, and various fundraising activities. Under the leadership of agriculture teacher Craig Lungren, the program has expanded to offer 12 agriculture classes, up from six in previous years.

The funds will support students attending conferences, purchasing FFA gear, and completing projects. New agriculture teacher Kyndall Capps has joined Lungren in reviving traditional FFA contests, including livestock and meat judging.

This year, the program also introduced new animals, such as sheep, goats, and chickens, and plans to launch an aquaponics system by November. Students will learn about sustainable farming and work closely with the culinary academy to promote healthy eating. The evening showcased Seabreeze FFA’s growing role in the community, offering students hands-on learning opportunities in agriculture.
