Tropical Cyclone 4 Threatens Volusia County-Rain and Wind Expected

Graphic - National Hurricane Center

Volusia County is preparing for Potential Tropical Cyclone 4, which is expected to impact Florida's west coast by late Sunday or early Monday. The storm may bring 4 to 6 inches of rain and winds up to 25 mph to the county. Residents should prepare by assembling hurricane supplies and securing their properties. Sandbags are available at Osteen Fire Station #36 through tomorrow. To prevent flooding, the Public Works Department is inspecting storm drains and retention ponds, while the Coastal Division will remove amenities from Ormond Beach's dog-friendly area as a precaution. The Emergency Operations Center will be staffed throughout the weekend to provide updates. For the latest information, residents can use the Volusia Emergency Management app, check the county's website, and follow social media updates.

Volusia School Board Approves Random Search Policy for Campuses

The Volusia County School Board has enacted a new policy permitting random searches of individuals on school campuses without specific cause, starting this school year. The policy, which affects anyone on Volusia County public school grounds, was approved with only one dissenting vote.

The Student Code of Conduct has been updated to reflect this change, allowing site administrators to conduct random screenings using electronic devices. This policy aims to enhance safety in light of rising school shootings nationwide. Concerns about privacy and constitutional rights have been raised, particularly since a similar proposal was rejected in 2022.

The policy does not specify what constitutes 'reasonableness' for searches, which may lead to potential legal issues. As school shootings increase, including notable incidents in Florida, the policy aligns with broader safety efforts like the 'guardian program,' which places armed personnel in schools.
