Ormond Beach Tables Controversial Landing Fee Proposal Amid Public Concerns

The Ormond Beach City Commission has delayed a proposal to introduce a landing fee at the Ormond Beach Municipal Airport, following opposition from the local aviation community. The fee, designed to help reduce the airport's nearly $1 million debt, would charge $3 per landing for every 1,000 pounds. Local pilots, flight schools, and business owners raised concerns that the fee could reduce air traffic and negatively impact the local economy, urging the commission to reconsider. Many also pointed out that the proposal had not been reviewed by the Aviation Advisory Board. Although the city estimated the fee could generate $236,000 annually, the commission decided to table the proposal and directed staff to seek input from the advisory board before proceeding. The decision reflects ongoing discussions about how to make the airport self-sustaining without overly burdening the local community.

Volusia County Launches Mitigation Plan Update, Seeks Community Input

Volusia County’s Emergency Management Division is conducting a five-year review of its Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS) to reduce disaster risks. The first public meeting was held at the Emergency Operations Center, where officials outlined their goal of strengthening the county’s resilience against both natural and man-made disasters. Emergency Management Director Clint Mecham emphasized the importance of reducing risks to critical infrastructure, citing examples like flooding roadways. The plan is being developed in collaboration with local leaders and the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council, which is analyzing recent disasters, including Hurricane Ian, to improve future responses. Community engagement sessions will be held in October to gather public feedback, which will help shape the final mitigation plan. The review process will conclude with a presentation of the updated strategy in December.

National Weather Service Confirms Funnel Cloud Over Daytona Beach

FoxNews35

The National Weather Service confirmed that a small funnel cloud was spotted today in Daytona Beach. The funnel, which developed from a cloud line stretching from Daytona Beach offshore, was visible for 5 to 10 minutes but did not reach the ground. It likely formed over the Intracoastal Waterway or near the Atlantic shore, according to NWS Melbourne. Funnel clouds, caused by a rotating column of air beneath cumulonimbus clouds, are often linked with thunderstorms. Although they resemble tornadoes, they remain classified as funnel clouds unless they make ground contact. The NWS noted that while funnel clouds can evolve into tornadoes, this requires intensified rotation and a downward extension of the funnel to the surface. Fortunately, today's funnel cloud dissipated without becoming a tornado.
