Ormond Beach Vandal and Curious Burglar Face Legal Trouble

A 22-year-old Ormond Beach woman has been arrested for vandalizing a big box store's parking lot, causing $1,000 in damage. She was caught spray-painting the store's sidewalk and sign, and continued her defacement even after being confronted. The woman was later found at a nearby gas station, where she was seen using motor oil to write a message regarding a previous legal issue she felt was ignored. Both the store and the gas station are pressing charges.

In a separate case, a 33-year-old man was detained at a construction site where he was found hiding after reportedly cutting a lock to explore the building. He admitted to his actions and was found with methamphetamine. Both individuals are now facing legal consequences.

Local Ormond Fisherman Warns of Risks to Coral Reef from Beach Sand Dredging

Fishermen in Flagler County, including Jimmy Hull of Hull Seafood in Ormond Beach, are expressing concerns about a beach erosion project off Flagler Beach. The project involves dredging sand from several miles offshore and placing it along a 3-mile stretch of beach. Hull fears that this operation could negatively impact a nearby coral reef, which is about 2 miles from the dredging site.

He is worried that the silt from the dredging could settle on the reef, potentially harming it and disrupting marine life. While Hull supports the beach restoration effort, he suggests that sand should be sourced from a more distant location to avoid damaging the reef. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing the project, and inquiries about these concerns have been referred to them, but a response has not yet been received.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office is investigating a potential theft ring connected to a recent boat and trailer heist in New Smyrna Beach. Deputies are seeking Eliecer De La Fuente in connection with the theft, which occurred last week in broad daylight from a family’s driveway. The investigation suggests that the theft may be part of a larger criminal operation. Witnesses saw a van involved in the theft, which was traced to a local auto shop and then to Daytona Beach Airport, where the suspects rented an F-150 truck. They returned to the boat, covered it with a tarp, and later returned the truck at Fort Lauderdale Airport. An arrest warrant has been issued for De La Fuente, who faces a $50,000 bond, while authorities continue to search for a second suspect.

NHC Monitors Tropical Wave with Increasing Odds of Development Now 60%

image: NOAA-NHC

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical disturbance in the Atlantic with a 60% chance of development. Currently situated several hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands and affected by Saharan dust, the system may strengthen as it moves over warmer waters in the southwestern Atlantic. A tropical depression could form late this week near the Greater Antilles or the Bahamas, and if it intensifies into a tropical storm, it would be named Debby.

Models suggest the system is unlikely to impact Central Florida as a hurricane, with potential effects this weekend expected to be limited to rain. If the disturbance strengthens significantly, it might move north along Florida's Atlantic side, resulting in rain and rip currents. If it remains weak, it could shift into the Gulf, bringing heavier rainfall to Florida. More detailed forecasts are anticipated by midweek.
