🚨 Ormond Beach Man Loses $14,000 in Scam

A reminder to stay alert, Ormond Beach police are investigating after an 82-year-old man was reportedly scammed out of $14,000. According to an incident report, two men approached the victim outside a local big-box store on July 1, claiming they were collecting donations for a church in Sierra Leone. They allegedly promised that a substantial contribution would later result in the victim receiving more than $60,000 and displayed a briefcase containing stacks of cash. The victim drove the men to a bank, withdrew money from his accounts and handed it over. The suspects disappeared while he returned inside for his forgotten cellphone. He later reported the incident and wishes to pursue charges.

🏡 Four Volusia Veterans Receive New Homes

Four local veterans are settling into homes of their own following a collaborative housing project in DeLand. West Volusia Habitat for Humanity and Volusia County's Community Services Department, through the Volusia Values Veterans Program, partnered with local businesses and volunteers to complete four houses on East Walts Avenue. More than 100 people gathered July 15 for a dedication ceremony where the veterans received their keys. County staff and volunteers also helped paint and landscape the properties, while eligible veterans received assistance with down payments and grant funding. The project combines Habitat's affordable-housing mission with the county's efforts to connect veterans with services, employment opportunities and community resources.

⚖️ Rep. Cory Mills Reportedly Under DOJ Investigation

U.S. Rep. Cory Mills, who represents Florida's 7th Congressional District, is reportedly under criminal investigation by the U.S. Justice Department, according to NBC News sources cited by WESH 2. The investigation reportedly involves Mills' finances, including interest in some alleged overseas business dealings, and is being handled through the Middle District of Florida. Mills is separately the subject of a House Ethics Committee investigation announced in November 2025 involving allegations concerning campaign finance laws, congressional resources and personal conduct. Mills, who has represented District 7 since 2023, is also seeking re-election and faces three Republican opponents in the August primary. A separate lawsuit challenging his placement on the primary ballot was dismissed with prejudice.
