The Seventh Day Baptist Church of Daytona Beach, with support from the First Liberty Institute and Sidley Austin LLP, is fighting to reopen its food pantry after city officials ordered its closure last October. The church's legal team argues that the city's actions violate their First Amendment rights and allege that the city has selectively enforced a 2011 ordinance that bans food pantries in redevelopment areas. While another church in a similar situation was allowed to reopen, the Seventh Day Baptist Church has faced continued obstacles. The lawsuit raises concerns about whether the church received proper notice to comply with the ordinance and challenges the city's justification for the ban. The church, represented by local attorney Chobee Ebbets, is not seeking damages but aims to resume its longstanding mission of feeding the hungry.

Peach Valley Café’s Ormond East Location Closing After 23 Years

Peach Valley Café has announced the closure of its Ormond East location after 23 years due to the loss of its lease. The popular brunch restaurant, located at 185 E. Granada Blvd., served its final customers Labor Day, as shared in a Facebook post on August 27. While the closure brings an end to a beloved spot in the community, the café reassured customers that its presence in Ormond Beach will continue. Patrons are encouraged to visit the Ormond West location, just three miles away at 1185 W. Granada Blvd., Suite 1, where the same familiar faces and menu will be available. The closure marks the end of an era for the Ormond East site, but Peach Valley Café remains dedicated to serving its customers at its remaining location.

Former DEP Employee Fired After Revealing Secret State Park Proposals

James Gaddis, a former cartographer at Florida's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), claims he was fired after leaking plans to add golf courses, pickleball courts, and lodges to several state parks, including Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Gaddis, who was responsible for drafting the controversial plans, says he could no longer remain silent about what he described as "too bad and too egregious." The leak prompted a massive public outcry, leading Governor Ron DeSantis and the DEP to withdraw the proposals. Gaddis, a single father, has since started a GoFundMe campaign after his dismissal, which he believes was due to his actions. Despite fears for his safety during public meetings, Gaddis has been praised on social media for his courage in exposing the secretive project. Governor DeSantis later referred to the plans as "half-baked" and "nowhere near ready for prime time."
