🚧 Prince of Peace Parishioners Ask FDOT to Reconsider Hand Avenue Median Design
Parishioners at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Ormond Beach are asking the community for help after recent FDOT “improvements” on Hand Avenue created a serious access concern for the church, its thrift store, and its adoration chapel.
According to church members, new median islands now block the left-turn entrance into the property for drivers approaching from the west. That means parishioners, shoppers, volunteers, and chapel visitors are forced to continue past the church and make a U-turn farther up the road at the intersection of Hand Ave. and Nova— a change many believe will create an unsafe traffic situation, especially for older drivers and those unfamiliar with the area.
The church community has already gathered petition signatures and is now asking concerned citizens to contact FDOT and urge officials to rethink the current design before it creates unnecessary safety risks or hardship for those trying to reach the church.
Anyone who wishes to express support for Prince of Peace Catholic Church may contact the FDOT engineer in charge, Mr. Kasbeer, at 386-736-5967.
Community voices can make a difference!!

🏛️Three Ormond Beach officials have received Florida League of Cities Home Rule Hero awards for their advocacy during the 2026 legislative session: City Commissioner Travis Sargent, Deputy Mayor Lori Tolland, and City Manager Joyce Shanahan. The award recognizes local government officials — elected and non-elected — who consistently engage with state legislators to ensure municipal perspectives are represented in Tallahassee. Tolland and Shanahan are back-to-back recipients, earning the honor for the second consecutive year. Sargent receives it for the first time. In an era when local governments are regularly finding their authority preempted by state law on issues from zoning to rent control, the willingness to show up and make the case for Home Rule matters more than ever.

🎓More than 4,000 students crossed the stage at Daytona State College's commencement ceremony Tuesday at the Ocean Center — one of the largest graduating classes in the school's history. The Class of 2026 included 1,845 Associate of Arts graduates, 735 Associate of Science graduates, and hundreds more earning bachelor's degrees, certificates, and adult education credentials. Among the most meaningful moments: Carlina Roberts became the third generation of her family to graduate from DSC, joining her grandmother Paula Morton (2001) and her father, Volusia County Tax Collector Will Roberts. Over 1,000 students graduated with honors of some kind. The full class also included 325 dual-enrolled high school students and 172 adult education graduates — a reminder that the path to a degree looks different for everyone, and DSC makes room for all of them.
