🌪️ Colorado State predicts 17 named storms for 2025

Get your go-bags ready—meteorologists at Colorado State University are predicting an above-average Atlantic hurricane season for 2025, with 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes (Category 3+). The forecast cites warmer ocean waters and low wind shear as prime conditions for storm development. Florida, especially the East Coast and Gulf regions, faces increased risk this year. The CSU team estimates a 26% chance that a major hurricane will make landfall along the Florida peninsula. While the official season runs June 1 to November 30, peak activity is expected between mid-August and mid-October. Experts recommend preparing early with emergency supplies and a clear communication plan. Better to be ready than caught off guard.

🏃 Paul Shuler Runs Into Record Books

Seabreeze coach wins gold at World Masters Athletics Championships

Seabreeze High's own Paul Shuler recently laced up and raced his way into international glory at the World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships in Gainesville. Competing in the men’s 55–59 division, Shuler not only clocked personal records in the 3,000-meter and 10K road races, but also earned a team gold medal with the U.S. squad in the 10K. This marked only his second 10K competition—impressive for a coach who took up serious running just three years ago. Shuler is better known locally for leading Seabreeze’s wrestling and bowling teams, but he’s proving there's plenty of fuel left in the tank. “Wearing the USA uniform felt incredible,” he said. He’s already eyeing future competitions—world individual gold may be next. And yes, he might celebrate with one of his signature handstands.

🎭 Ormond resident reflects on a career in film, fashion, and life

Marie McKenzie-Cortez has lived many lives—on set, on stage, and around the world. The 92-year-old Ormond Beach resident starred in films like Guarding Tess and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, and modeled in the golden age of New York fashion. She started at 18, balancing ambition with practicality when college wasn’t an option. Her journey brought her to Europe, marriage to a West Point cadet, and a full-circle return to acting later in life. Now living at Paradise Pointe Assisted Living, McKenzie-Cortez still holds onto her spark, saying she has “a life left to live.” Despite a stroke last year, she’s looking ahead with optimism—and yes, she still collects residual checks.

🚀 Volusia teens shine in “Shark Tank”-style business competition

From food prep to hypoallergenic jewelry, Volusia County high schoolers proved they have a serious entrepreneurial spirit at a recent district-wide pitch contest. Spruce Creek senior Geo Hoffmann took first place with “PREP,” a meal-prep service focused on SNAP recipients, inspired by his family’s struggles with food insecurity. He now advances to a regional competition in Miami. Payton Bonino, also from Spruce Creek, placed second with “Bella,” a jewelry line tailored to people with nickel allergies. And Payton Garner from Mainland High clinched third with her “EssentialCube” dorm-starter kit idea. The event, backed by the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, gave students a chance to solve real-world problems—and pitch them to seasoned business leaders. “The biggest lesson? Learning how to talk to people,” Hoffmann said.

🛢️ What a Surprise! Palm Coast residents raise red flags over proposed terminal

A proposal by Belvedere Terminals to build a massive fuel storage facility in Palm Coast is sparking heated debate. Residents voiced concerns over potential spills, health risks, and property values, likening it to “a nuclear waste site.” The company claims the depot would be state-of-the-art, citing fire suppression systems and storm-resilient infrastructure. While some city leaders are weighing economic benefits, including job creation and industrial growth, others worry about rushing the process. A public petition against the project has already garnered over 1,600 signatures. Belvedere had previously pitched the project in Ormond Beach, which ultimately rejected it. Now, all eyes are on Palm Coast’s final decision as state funding and community trust hang in the balance.
