We'll start light. A 52-year-old Ormond Beach man was arrested this week after punching a local restaurant owner — twice — over a $10.36 tab. According to the police report, the customer had already disputed paying the bill, insisting he'd been overcharged, before eventually coughing up the money and being asked to leave. He declined, saying he was waiting for a friend in the bathroom. The owner, with admirable patience, gathered three employees as witnesses and walked him out. Once outside, the customer landed two punches, later telling police that the owner and staff had tried to hit him first. Witnesses disagreed. He was taken to jail. The friend in the bathroom was not available for comment.
✦
Now for the feel-good story of the week, and it's a good one. Karsceal Turner — assistant basketball coach at Mainland High School, Navy veteran, and former journalist — has co-authored a children's book with his two kids, 7-year-old Kameron and 5-year-old Kamille. The book is called "Turner Tag Team's Terrific Tour of 7 Fire Stations in Daytona Beach," and it follows the family's real visits to fire stations across Ormond Beach, Daytona, and Holly Hill, with actual photos rendered as cartoons throughout.
Turner grew up in Oklahoma City riding his bike to hang out at fire stations, dreamed of becoming a firefighter, joined the Navy instead, studied broadcast journalism at Bethune-Cookman, became a reporter at the Daytona Times, and eventually landed at Mainland alongside his old college friend, head coach Joe Giddens. Life, as it tends to do, had other plans. But the fire station love never left.
”
The kids got to spray hoses, meet firefighters, and — at Daytona Beach Fire Station 1 — slide down an actual fire pole. ("That's a bucket list type of thing," Turner said, with the energy of a man who has waited his whole life for that moment.) His son now wants to be a firefighter. His daughter is reserving judgment until the police station tour, which will be the subject of the next book in the series. The current book is available online and at the Ormond Beach Library — where, Turner notes, it's usually checked out. That's a good sign. Visit bit.ly/turnertagteam-book to grab a copy.
✦
On a much heavier note: a 64-year-old Ormond Beach man died Saturday afternoon after his bicycle collided with a Ford F-150 on U.S. 1 near the Flagler-Volusia county line. According to Florida Highway Patrol, the man was riding northbound in the outside southbound lane — against traffic — when he attempted to cross into the median and was struck by the pickup heading south in the inside lane. The driver and his one-year-old passenger were uninjured. The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. The road was partially blocked for over two hours. It is the second cycling or pedestrian fatality in the area in less than two weeks, following the death of a wheelchair user on Granada Boulevard on March 16th. These roads are unforgiving, and the margin for error is small.
✦
Finally, if you have opinions about the direction of the country and a free Friday morning, there are some organized outlets for that energy. "No Kings" protests are planned across the region on March 28th as part of a national day of demonstrations organized in response to ICE operations, military actions, and cost-of-living concerns. Locally, three events are confirmed: in Ormond Beach, from 10 a.m. to noon at the foot of the west side of the Granada Bridge; in Daytona Beach, from 10 a.m. to noon at City Hall, 301 S. Ridgewood Ave.; and in Flagler Beach, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Moody Boulevard and State Road A1A. The events are organized by the “No Kings” group, which has held similar demonstrations nationally over the past year. As always, the Vine covers the news — what you do with it is entirely up to you.
