🎸 Farewell to Rick Derringer-Ormond Resident
Rock music icon Rick Derringer, best known for “Hang On Sloopy” and “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo,” passed away in Ormond Beach at the age of 77. TMZ reports Derringer suffered heart failure on Monday, following earlier recovery from a triple bypass. His wife described his passing as peaceful.
Born in Celina, Ohio, Derringer shot to fame as a teenager with The McCoys and went on to collaborate with legends like Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, and Bonnie Tyler. He famously penned “Real American,” the theme song for wrestling legend Hulk Hogan, and even produced Grammy-winning albums for Weird Al Yankovic.
Derringer spent his final days in Ormond Beach, a quieter chapter for a musician who helped shape the sound of classic rock.

🎓 Full-Circle Moments for Local Grads
Ormond Beach schools hosted their heartwarming annual “Senior Clap Outs,” welcoming graduating seniors back to their elementary school roots. Students from Seabreeze, Mainland, Atlantic, Father Lopez, and Spruce Creek paraded through the hallways of Tomoka, Beachside, Pathways, Pine Trail, and Ormond Beach Elementary, dressed in caps and gowns.
For many, it was a nostalgic journey. Seniors reminisced about favorite trees, old mascots, and even sang their old school songs. Educators like Beachside's Melissa Heller reflected on the joy of seeing former students return, transformed and ready for the future.
The event, which included words of wisdom from graduating Seabreeze student Josh Yost and heartfelt memories from triplet seniors Emma, Hana, and Kendra Uneda, reminded everyone how foundational these early years are—and how inspiring it can be to come back and show the next generation what's possible.

🏛️ Mayor Leslie Named 'Home Rule Hero'
Ormond Beach Mayor Jason Leslie has earned the 2025 Home Rule Hero Award from the Florida League of Cities for his advocacy during this year’s legislative session. The award recognizes leaders who help protect local decision-making from outside interference.
In a statement, Leslie emphasized his commitment to keeping local governance in local hands: “Each community is unique, with its own priorities and character... that’s why people choose to live where they do.”
The Florida League of Cities praised recipients like Leslie for their persistence and strong local voice in Tallahassee. It’s a recognition that underscores the mayor’s steady leadership and the importance of maintaining the distinctive charm of Ormond Beach through community-based decisions.
