🥪 Rockefeller’s Goes Full-Service with Food Menu

Almost two years after opening as a popular local watering hole, Rockefeller’s in Ormond Beach is stepping up its game — with sliders and flatbreads, not just cocktails. Co-owner Slate Gray announced the launch of a new food menu on Oct. 3 during their “Taste of Rockefeller” event, with cuisine crafted by local Chef Angie Lutts. The offerings range from soups and sandwiches to appetizers and flatbreads, with brunch and coffee soon on the horizon.

Gray’s goal? A full-service café and brasserie that caters to both daytime loungers and nighttime revelers. With an expanded outdoor deck nearing completion, Rockefeller’s will soon seat 100 guests across the bar, courtyard, and patio.

Known for its high-energy events, like karaoke nights and themed pop-ups (hello, Halloween bar!), the team wants the space to be an all-day haven for locals. As Slate Gray put it: “We truly want to be a place for the community, for the city.”

💔 Flagler Mourns the Loss of Deputy Administrator Jorge Salinas

Flagler County is reeling from the sudden and tragic loss of Deputy County Administrator Jorge Salinas and his wife, Nancy, who were both killed in a hit-and-run crash on I-4 the night of Oct. 4. The couple were struck when their vehicle was hit in a multi-car accident triggered by a Dodge Durango that fled the scene.

Salinas, 59, had served the county since 2020 and was a pivotal part of its leadership team. His death leaves a “significant void,” said Commission Chair Andy Dance. Administrator Heidi Petito described Salinas as “a strong partner in leading Flagler County” and emphasized the deep sorrow felt by the team and community.

The Dodge Durango involved was later located abandoned, but as of yet, no arrests have been announced. Tributes poured in from local governments and law enforcement agencies, all recognizing Salinas’ dedication and service.

🔧 Scout Builds for Safety and Community

A big shoutout goes to 16-year-old Robert "Trey" Mattingly III from Troop 468, who recently completed a meaningful Eagle Scout service project — a prop house for the Ormond Beach Fire Department (OBFD) to use at community outreach events.

The project, which took over a year of planning and construction, was rushed to the finish line in time for National Night Out (now rescheduled to Nov. 10 due to weather). Trey and nearly 20 volunteers came together to build the prop in a single day, and the result? A glowing reception from OBFD and a chief’s pin awarded to Trey — a rare honor.

Beyond mastering a skill saw and creating a realistic-looking fire feature, Trey’s proudest moment was seeing his community come together to help. His advice to other scouts: ask around, you never know what opportunity might be waiting.

🚨 11-Year-Old Arrested for TikTok School Threat

In a troubling reminder of the digital age’s dark side, an 11-year-old Volusia County student has been arrested for making a violent threat against Campbell Middle School via TikTok. According to the sheriff’s office, the FBI flagged the comment, which referenced a school shooting and staff members.

Authorities confirmed the child had no access to firearms, but the situation was taken seriously, resulting in the boy’s arrest. The school district has declined to comment, but the incident underscores how threats — even those typed behind a screen — are no joke.

Law enforcement continues to urge parents to stay aware of their children's online activities and to treat all threats with the seriousness they demand.

🚗 Think Twice Before Tinting Your Tag

Florida drivers who’ve been hiding behind license plate covers, flippers, or “invisible” sprays now face real consequences. A new state law in effect since Oct. 1 takes aim at any device that obscures your license plate — whether to avoid tolls or dodge red light cameras.

What used to be a minor traffic infraction is now a second-degree misdemeanor with penalties of up to $500 and 60 days in jail. If you use one of these gadgets while committing a crime, it bumps up to a third-degree felony with possible prison time.

Even selling or possessing these devices is now punishable under HB 253. The bill also increases penalties for impersonating law enforcement with prohibited lights.

Bottom line: those gimmicky license plate covers and sprays might not work — and now they could cost you a lot more than a speeding ticket.
