🌊 Hurricane Erin Brings Rough Surf to Volusia
Hurricane Erin may be well offshore, but its wide-reaching wind field is already making waves—literally. Volusia County beaches are bracing for dangerous surf and rip currents this week as the storm churns northward.
Officials warn that while there’s no direct landfall threat, the ocean is becoming increasingly hazardous. Beachgoers are advised to check the flag system before diving in, stick close to lifeguard towers, and expect stronger rip currents. Boaters and paddlers should also prepare for choppy seas and keep a close eye on marine forecasts.
In a proactive move, the county has removed trash cans, portable restrooms, and other beach equipment to prevent storm damage. Tidal conditions could also limit beach driving, so visitors are encouraged to verify access before heading out.
For real-time updates on ocean conditions, lifeguard coverage, and open ramps, the Volusia Beaches app is your best bet. County officials continue to monitor the storm in coordination with the National Weather Service.

🚤 Officials Prep Beaches, Warn of Strong Rip Currents
Echoing those concerns, Volusia County officials are taking visible steps to keep both residents and visitors safe as Hurricane Erin stirs up the coastline. Beyond pulling beach equipment off the sand, lifeguards will remain on towers “as long as tidal conditions allow.” If conditions worsen, they’ll shift operations to control towers, ensuring continued coverage.
The National Weather Service cautions swimmers to expect “numerous, strong, life-threatening rip currents” alongside the building surf. Beach driving could also be disrupted, and those planning a seaside outing are encouraged to check access points first.
County spokesman Clayton Jackson emphasized that safety remains the top priority: “If surf or tide conditions make it unsafe to keep towers directly on the beach, lifeguards will continue providing coverage from the always-staffed control towers.”
Once again, the Volusia Beaches app is the go-to resource for current information on lifeguard stations, vehicle access, and more.

🍸 Margarita Society Brings Holiday Cheer
Switching from surf to celebration, one local tradition is preparing to spread joy long after hurricane season winds down. The Margarita Society of Volusia County will host its 37th annual black-tie Margarita Ball on November 22 at the Ocean Center. Admission is simple yet meaningful: bring a new, unwrapped toy.
What began in 1988 as a gathering among friends has blossomed into a marquee charity event. Last year’s ball welcomed over 1,500 guests and collected a record 4,045 toys, plus nearly $20,000 through its festive Holiday Tree Village.
The society also supports the community year-round. At its recent “Christmas in July” fundraiser, the group donated $1,500 each to the Early Learning Coalition, Jewish Federation, and FUTURES Foundation.
For those eager to give back or get involved, donations can be made at margaritasocietyvolusia.com. With the first ball of the holiday season already on the horizon, the Margarita Society continues to prove that a party can make a powerful difference.
