Seabreeze Alumnus Provides Furry Friends and Employment Opportunities for Special Needs Individuals

Photo: Pure Joy Cat Cafe Website

Since opening on May 25, Pure Joy Cat Cafe has achieved 27 cat adoptions and aims to offer inclusive employment opportunities. Founded by Frank Lund and his son Seabreeze alumnus Isaac Morden, who has Down's syndrome, the cafe provides a supportive work environment for individuals with special needs. Isaac, who recently transitioned from high school, has found a fulfilling role at the cafe, which aligns with his passion for animals. On July 30, Project Squad, a city program for special populations, donated supplies to the cafe and spent time with Isaac and the cats, demonstrating community support for inclusive hiring. The cafe is also working with EasterSeals to expand employment opportunities for people with special needs. Isaac’s positive impact is evident in his interactions with the animals and his pride in the cafe’s success. Check out the cafe at PureJoyCatCafe.com

Volusia County Teacher Wins Statewide 'Invested in Excellence' Award

Emily Fagerstrom, Volusia County's Teacher of the Year, has been honored with the "Invested in Excellence" award from the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations. Presented at the Florida Department of Education Teacher of the Year Gala, this statewide recognition includes a $2,000 prize. Fagerstrom was selected from 67 Teacher of the Year honorees for her innovative approach to education and commitment to student success.

Her career began as a substitute teacher in Volusia County, and she quickly distinguished herself as Port Orange Elementary's "First Year Teacher of the Year" in 2015. Since becoming a math instructional coach at Champion Elementary in 2021, Fagerstrom has been credited with driving significant improvements in math education. The FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools, which nominated her, highlighted her successful initiatives, including a Math Night event at Publix Supermarket.
