🥫 Hunger Action Month Rallies Central Florida
September marks Hunger Action Month, and Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is encouraging the community to take meaningful steps to support local families facing food insecurity. With federal funding cuts threatening hunger relief programs, Second Harvest is urging residents to participate in a variety of ways — from donating food and funds to volunteering and advocating.
There’s a full menu of actions to choose from: Join the inaugural 24-hour “Hunger Never Sleeps” volunteer marathon, wear orange on Sept. 9 for Hunger Action Day, or attend a “Food for Thought” tour on Sept. 17. Other ways to chip in include hosting a virtual food drive, donating $30 for 30 days, or purchasing hunger-fighting merchandise. Even small acts, like following Second Harvest on social media, can help spread awareness.
“Every action counts – no matter when it’s taken,” said CEO Derrick Chubbs. “We all have a role to play in feeding hope.”

📚 Volusia Scores an 'A' Despite Subject-Level Struggles
Volusia County Schools are proudly sporting their first overall ‘A’ grade since 2009, but beneath the applause lies a mixed report card. State data reveals nearly half of high schoolers are below grade level in math and English — raising eyebrows among parents and educators.
Before panic sets in, consider this: Volusia’s scores in math are actually better than the state average, and the district outperformed in science and social studies too. Recent gains since 2022 — including a 19-point bump in math and a 14-point jump in social studies — show positive momentum. However, SAT scores have slipped slightly over the past four years, now trailing the state average.
So how does an ‘A’ happen amid these numbers? Graduation rates and learning gains play a huge role — with Volusia boasting a 96% graduation rate. These metrics reflect overall student progress, which helped boost the district’s rank to 25th out of 67 in Florida.
Volusia schools say they're committed to continued academic excellence. Let’s hope next year’s report card keeps the trend moving upward.

🏁 NASCAR Returns to Daytona in High Gear for 2026
Daytona International Speedway will once again bookend the NASCAR Cup Series regular season in 2026 — proving once more that when it comes to racing, Daytona stays in the fast lane.
The iconic Daytona 500 kicks off the season on Sunday, Feb. 15, while the Coke Zero Sugar 400 roars to life on Saturday, Aug. 29, serving as the final chance for drivers to clinch a playoff spot. DIS President Frank Kelleher put it best: “Opening with the Daytona 500 and closing with a playoff-deciding race keeps Daytona at the heart of NASCAR’s biggest moments.”
Expect a full throttle weekend lineup that includes the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, the rebranded NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (thanks to a new multi-year sponsorship), and dual Daytona appearances from each. Fans will get their fill with qualifying, duels, and back-to-back races from Feb. 11–15 and again in late August.

The Origins of the Labor Day Holiday
Labor Day, observed on the first Monday in September, is more than just the unofficial end of summer—it is a tribute to the American labor movement and the millions of workers who helped build the nation. Its origins trace back to the late 19th century, a period of rapid industrial growth when factory workers often faced grueling hours, unsafe conditions, and meager pay.
In 1882, members of New York City’s Central Labor Union organized the first “Labor Day” parade. Ten thousand workers marched from City Hall to Union Square, demanding better working conditions and celebrating the dignity of labor. The idea quickly spread, and within a decade, dozens of states had adopted similar observances.
The turning point came in 1894. That summer, the country was shaken by the Pullman Strike, a nationwide railroad boycott that brought commerce to a standstill. The strike ended violently, with federal troops called in and more than two dozen workers killed. In the aftermath, seeking to ease tensions and honor workers’ contributions, Congress unanimously passed legislation making Labor Day a national holiday. President Grover Cleveland signed it into law on June 28, 1894.
Since then, Labor Day has symbolized both the struggles and the achievements of working people. It reminds Americans of the rights secured—like the eight-hour workday, child labor protections, and safer workplaces—and of the continuing importance of fair treatment for all who labor. Today’s celebrations, from parades to backyard barbecues, carry forward the spirit of that first march in 1882.
